Shaded vs. Flat Adoptables???
I've always wondered what people prefer!
On one hand, a shaded adoptable can look more like a finished picture. But on the other, one that's not shaded might act better as a reference.
I usually do my Base Adoptables as shaded, either as cell-shaded like my Red Panda Adoptables or, like my Cervettes, as painted shading.
What do you think?
Do you like shading or not?
Do you like colored backgrounds, or white ones?
Just something that's been on my mind.

I honestly love the way you did the Cervettes, but I think that if it's more painted shading that there should be a way to show the colour palette so that when they get commissions of the characters, the colours are correct. xD I think the cell shaded ones are fine, but it'd be kinda hard to determine proper colours for the cervettes, imo.

I think shaded with a color palette would be best. You have the finished look, but also a reference with the colors. Maybe even offer to send the adopt with & without the color pallet, so the pallet could go in scraps? Iono..I have tons of adopts and I know for a fact it's nice to have either a color pallet or unshaded version for reference, but you're so right about the shaded looking best.

i don't like detailed shading on adoptables, because like you said, it makes for a confusing reference if someone's picking colors with an eyedropper.. however if the unshaded version is provided with the shaded version, i think that would work?

or a palette could be added on the side :B

Seconding this. Same reason why most ref.sheets are flat colored 'cuz it's easier to see/pick out the colors, but an alternate flat color of the same image or color palette would solve that I think.

I very strongly prefer flat-colored, unless it comes with both versions when you send them the file(s). Depending on the shading style it can sometimes be difficult to tell if something is just shading or if it's a marking, and when the thing you're selling is focused around the design it's important to be able to correctly make out the markings. c:

How about, do flat color but offer an 'up-grade' to a shaded version for a bit extra money? That way, everyone can get what they want...?

I think cell shaded are fine for adoptables, but detailed shading can be a pain unless you have a color swatch next to the character so people know what their flat colors are.

Well, I figure the shaded ones sell better, but people with flat preferences usually like that the colors are clear and not distorted by shading. So in that case having the color palettes put to the side of the shaded adopt helps. :3
