Paws, Canings, and Cherishing a Sub

Over the last couple weeks or so I have been chatting to a wonderful sub from another website. She is an absolutely wonderful person and a pleasure to talk to. I really am happy to have had the luck to experience talking and roleplaying with such a good person. If this sub, who I call 'Paws'-she knows who she is-is the future of BDSM and kitten play-then BDSM and kitten play has a very bright future to look forward to indeed!
I have learnt much from our interactions but I think the real, take-home message I took from our experience and my own thoughts is this:
Submission is a thing to be cherished. It is a gift of no small significance that is given at will by the submissive half. Dominants and submissives, to me, are equals who fulfill roles. One is not inherently 'lower' than the other. A submissive is not a piece of meat to be abused, but developed into a better sub, and given the life she can enjoy by a Dominant who s/he can trust. Submission, and the trust that comes with it, is something that a Dominant has to earn. Nobody gets submission by right.
The key thing is, I really have come to cherish and value our interactions, and I'm beginning to wrap my head around this crazy D/s world. I think I will continue to pursue relations with Paws. We're currently arranging a meet at the cinema. Getting the nerves thinking about it.
I think with Domination, my main thing is to be a friend as much as a Dom. I want my sub to talk to me, to communicate, which is something I think is very important. I also feel it is the Dom's responsibility to look after the sub. I found when I was roleplaying with Paws, things got a bit intense and she once got a bit upset. I noticed this right away and called 'Yellow' and gave her a good talk about the purpose of punishment and why she was getting it at that point. We kind of semi-roleplay, where I give orders and she obeys them partly in roleplay, partly in her actual real life if practical, so I try my best to help. Ultimately, I want my kitten, my pet to be the happiest she can be with me. So, I do find it is important to look after, and observe the sub during play. Keep an eye out for anything and always be ready to call on a safeword if something is amiss and most importantly, talk!
In other news, I've discovered I LOVE to give a good caning. xD
