"Your Character Here" and Adoptables
So it seems these things, have become the new fad of FA.
Now although I honestly don't really like either of these things (Or at least the majority of them, but I won't rant), a friend recently brought to mind an idea of how I could do these YCH style pictures without involving money, which I feel is a more generous way of doing them.
The rules are simple:
- Character slots FREE. (I still however hold the right to reject characters I do not wish to draw)
- Character slots are first-come first-serve. (See above exception)
- A Slot can only be claimed by current watchers. (If you watch me after the YCH Slots have been made available then your claim will not count)
- Only one character slot AND picture per person. (A user will be allowed to claim another slot later once a sufficient amount of other users have had a chance)
I feel like this is a more Win-Win scenario for myself and you guys. This will allow me to continue drawing the pictures and ideas I enjoy, whilst giving you guys the opportunity to get yourselves involved in them without needing to ask for a request of buy a commission.
Thoughts?

This is a nice idea, though~
There's really no good way to give out free art though, honestly :T
I love this idea because not only does it let some of us who don't want to bug ya all that much have a way to get involved in some of the great things you do, but with multiple pictures of this type you'll have a lot of different positions and those who really want to be in certain spots most will have a good shot at it. (If you have several ideas in mind and mention the basics of some of them before opening slots, it might give people some time to think about which position they'd like to have a chance at most.)
and yeah I think everyone has worked out that ych auctions is easy way to make a quick buck >.>
It's kinda hard to do well.
One method, which has been stated already, would be to leave who's included up to you, the artist. This choice would merely be based on who you felt like drawing at the moment. Although, in my opinion, this seems like it could become a difficult task, depending on how many people apply for the YCH.
Another method method that I can think of, which is slightly similar and could be somewhat simpler to manage, would be to take the people who applied to the YCH freebie, and turn it into more of a raffle. Choose which of the people entered that you wouldn't be interested in drawing at that given time, and then do a drawing for the remaining individuals.
I do have to disagree with Lynaeus's statement on there being no good way to give out free art. Having joined as many raffles/attempted as many kiribans as I have, they really seem to be an efficient method towards giving out free art, since there's only a chance at winning. The lucky ones who win would be just that, and it really prevents any views towards "unfair decisions" since its all chance, unlike the fixed choice (which could be seen as personal favoritism) of first-come first-serve, and artist's choice (although, artist's choice makes the greatest deal of sense, given that he/she is the one drawing the image.)
Just my thoughts on the matter. >>; *runs off*
I do like the raffle idea, though that would mean I'd need to leave the slots open for quite a while or else people will whine that they didn't get the chance to enter. :/
One possibility could be to hold multiple YCHs... Have each one lasting a different length of time, with the requirement that one person is only able to join one YCH at a time. Would allow for multiple people in differing time zones to take part in the YCH chances, while still providing equal opportunities to each participant.
The raffle idea is sounding better, but I wouldn't wanna have to leave a sketch up for, like, a week just to allow everyone time to enter.
It does work effectively towards being entirely luck based (and I assume that it will be more like kiriban chancing than anything. First person to post the screenshot of the kiriban gets it, and everyone else is just shit out of luck. ;P) Also, I'm retracting my statement on first-come first-serve being possibly based on personal opinion; Apparently my brain wasn't fully registering what it actually was.
Honest opinion? Either use first-come first-serve and just deal with the influx of people complaining about their lack of luck, or leave it up for at least an hour or two, and make it a raffle. Whichever you use, you're going to get complaints, so its just a matter of which method works best for you.
For example... you open up a selection of YCH positions on a picture of a large table: Furs as food. Or a konga line, for example. These help give an idea to the people of what is expected, while at the same time, helps you pre-plan it with-out having to scramble around trying to draw a scene to accomedate a large number of furs.
Also, themes are fun, as it gives an appeal of a group activity. Like a party.
As for selections, an artist I know of uses a password or a passage for the commenter to add into their reply. She pops a word or something you need to do in the journal and if you don't say it, you don't get in the line.
Unfortunately though I wouldn't want to just say what the idea is and then let people ask to be in it before I've even started. I come up with a lot of ideas that go nowhere because either too much time passes before I get the chance to draw it and I've lost interest in it, or I later realize the idea was silly or wouldn't work right.
Your way of doing it sounds very generous and fair to me ranger, obviously as you are doing it out of your kindess and not for profit you have all the right to pick and choose who you include, from what tickles your fancy and what you are wanting to doodle (^. .^)
Its a nice way to consider things and could possbily bring more sonas to your attension that you might wanna draw and expand your skill sets by trying new things, il definetly have to keep an eye out incase you get a craving to draw something yellow and blue.
The whole point of this is to allow people, who aren't picky about the specifics of a picture, the chance to get in on one or more of my pictures instead of needing to ask for a request or pay for a commission.
I'm aware it's exploitable, but there will be rules in place to keep people from doing that.
