Your computer isnt getting faster/slower because of this. FA is just slow as balls and has been for over a month now. Surprised they are only now addressing this problem.

It's a free site so why complain? Yeah it sucks, but FA cares about its members. Chances are, they have been trying to fix it for months or at least isolate the issue.

SQL Deadlock? Missing SQL Index? DDOS?

I dunno what SQL deadlocking is, but I know how to fix "things keep locking"! What 'cha gotta do, is hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, and start cancelling every process that doesn't look an awful lot like "WINDOWS.DLL", and then find a button that looks like a circle with a line extending from it (It may even glow!), and push and hold it for a good ten seconds or so, until you hear a lot of relays chattering. Problem solved! :3

Well, this is Linux, so a chron job to run /sbin/init 6 should continuously unlock the files.

Deadlocks are natural, you just have to account for them on every one of your queries, most common way is to make queries time out quickly and just retry them because 99.9% of the time they lock for 0.5ms and the other 30 seconds is just waiting for it to time-out.

The below piece of code has fixed all deadlocks for me, feel free to adapt it how ever you like to your adapter if you can bring you self to accept help.

This is why I save the information and refs in docs on my computer, so I can access my commission work even if something drastic happens and I have no internet.

Just some friendly advice you didn't ask for, but it's a really good idea to keep a copy of everything you need for commissions saved on your computer and in something like your e-mail. I personally even keep physical hard copies for my records. Lost too much data in the past to take commissions any other way. But we all do things differently :> Sorry you can't get to work right now!

They did have to disable notes for a short bit to get the site to keep running, which surprised me a bit. But considering the rest of the night the site has been working for me the way it was before the constant 500 errors I'd have to say they may have fixed the problem. For now.

That could be just the way they have FA running- the specific server, etc. Because FA usually takes just slightly longer for me. But yes, it could just be some sort of compatibility issue or whatever

I've seen ddos that just affected the site running and not neccessarly shut down. Of course, depending on how badly it affects, it may lead to the admins shutting it down.

That being said, thanks for trying to fix the problem! The site's been awful slow lately.

Upgrade the hard drive into 500GB, 750GB, 1TB, or 4TB if it's very slow, and put 4, 8, 16, or 32 gigs of ram, that will make it very faster.

Hardware isn't the only thing that affects a site's performance. FurAffinity has several servers, for one thing, and they're all pretty beefy. It's a matter of how they've coded the website.

Do you have any sort of rough estimate we're talking about here?

I may be wrong, but there are at least 2 servers that are "spare" and have no logical function for the site right now. So right there are 2 extra servers that can help with the load.

I would point out that this information was taken from the FA page on wikifur (Which also seems to be down).

but you do have to remember that the site was poorly coded from the get-go and is continually patched with plasters and sticky tape to keep it running.

Now i'm not being negative and saying that the entire site is rubbish, I'm just saying I can understand peoples frustration with slow loads and broken features, etc..

I don't have any issue with them running the site, or think that it's just poorly done, but it does seem to be a bit... "primitive" as far as site fixes. But it's pretty understandable, really. I mean, I can only imagine the messages (AKA complaints) they must get when the site is down. Plus they may lose some users/members/visitors by being notorious for going down somewhat often and for longer periods of time. In my opinion, they should look for when the site is least active and do what they can there. But then again, I've never created/maintained a website.

FA also isn't clustered, though the last time they talked about it, they seemed to be under the impression that they would need two identical machines to do so. *sigh*

I many times tonight got 502 and 504 site errors and had some pages take about 5 minutes to load.

The funny part is, is that a lot of the people (probably 99%) who are complaining, have never had to run and maintain a website like FA, ALONG with having users that constantly complain when there's hiccups. At least they don't take the site down every time there's an issue. Sure, there may be quite a few small hiccups, but at least they keep the site partially running. I've seen sites that completely shut down when there's a problem. At least try and be grateful that they're keeping it partially up-and-running, I can make a pretty safe guess and say that their job for the site- working/running wise- isn't easy.

It's a free site, guys. Everybody's working hard to get things fixed and they don't need a bunch of unappreciative jerks making rude comments.

So what if it's free, a slow site is annoying for its users and if they don't get this issue sorted out then many people will just end up leaving like what happened on Facebook when they were having issues too and they still are but not as bad as here.

You do have a valid point but at the same time you'd think with the amount of "bawwing" people have been doing they would of had this problem sorted out by now but they haven't and again when issues like this keep persisting people can end up leaving the site so it's in their best interest to get this issue sorted out ASAP.

Free services always have some kind of income. Free services don't exist just because somebody is nice. Well, some do, but even those have an income of "I feel better for being nice".
If you sign up for a free service and it sucks, you stop using it, right? So what about at the extremes?
- Where's all the art? The artists left because they didn't like it. Well, too bad for those artists, but it doesn't affect everybody else, right? Not like users care if there is one art upload a week.
- Where're all the page views and happy comments and commissions? The users left because they didn't like it. Too bad for those users, who are enjoying art somewhere else, but it doesn't affect other people. The remaining artists don't actually care if anybody sees their work and likes it. Sure it would be seen by just as many people if it was put on a Gopher address at an EDU, but that's okay.

It's a balance. With a free service, all one can do is complain or stop using it. Free does not mean "Built like shit and you have to accept it". Free means you cannot voice your upsetness with a lack of your money. So you can only voice your complaints with your departure - which means the providers of said service have NO idea what to fix if they want to keep you around - or your voice, which means they do know.

So yes, everybody has both the RIGHT and indeed, nearly the responsibility to complain. The service provider just needs to take into account what the complaint is, whether it has merit, and whether it can and will be addressed without having other negative impacts (such as upsetting more people, costing money they don't have, etc.)

The sitcking/unsticking has been on and off given certain times of the day.

Based on what has been previously mentioned, it's a database issue and as such anything linked to it is generating a greater load time(aka, lag).
