the tl;dr is "why do you pay up to $500+ in a pre-posed picture when you can get the same, as a comission, for far less?"

And the answer is: Why do you care about what strangers on the Internet do with their money?

I think its more to do with the fact more artists are doing autions that while are in no way wrong, it just results in people who can't afford the outrageous amounts autions tend to get rather than offering commissions at standard prices.

And that they stops offering normal commissions and only do auctions.

Yeah I've seen a few artists gone to do only autions which is a bummer.

Because certain artists have massive egos that need stroking so they make MLP YCH auctions all the time.

That's between a few pieces by someone where each one was going for 300-500+ for something worth far less then that. But I'm not going to link them because I don't want the drama from it.

But yeah, it's some crazy money ontop of their commissions, which they've since closed seemingly long-term at this point since auctions make them so much more.

Oh, I don't think people -would- cause drama. But the artist takes everything personally and plays the racism card when she does something or someone says something she doesn't like.

Auctions can generate a lot more for the same artwork, and really it's just a matter of how much time we put into things as artist.
I under-charge for my time. By a lot, lot, lot- but I'm not popular either. I have less of a problem with auctions than I do with artists who post tons of adoptables.

I get what you're saying, and it IS really annoying sometimes! I can also get why, from a business perspective, an artist does it too. :I But if that's all you're doing, it does feel a little.. I dunno how to say it. I don't like it, haha.

Yeah i dont have a problem if the artist needs/want to do an auction. The problem comes when you ends paying and overpriced picture that is preposed and you dont get any extra from that.

If they could offer a extra picfure if the pids reach a limit or somethign else it chouls be more interesting.

The other thing that annoys is that they offer comissions for $100 (for example) and when they say they get $500 they simply stops oppening slots for commissions and replace them for auctions. It's kinda sad to see that people that was saving money for 2 or 4 months to get something special and they finally can't because the artists get interested only on money and lost its passion.

Yeah, and that does suck for the buyer. But hey! Maybe then they can shop around a little more at least?

idk I personally don't think I'll ever do auctions, even when my skill level gets to the point where I am a more demanded artist.
I like keeping regular prices and regular commissions. Sales are fun too because I get more customers that way lololol.
I can understand why some artists do them occasionally, because they are a nice quick way to earn money quickly if you're in a tight spot financially, but the artists who drop regular commissions in favor of them confuse me. I know where you're coming from.

That simply shows that they're interested only in money and its perfectly fine. But not all the people have $500 to spend in a picture. At the end the comissioners capable of pay that will dissapear or willl not be interested in a presposed thing anymore.

The key is keep the balance, wich the major part of they aren't doing.

It's already beginning to make them disappear. From what I've noticed it's been the same 'elite' group of commissioners winning most of the auctions. ll of them from the popufurs at least. It's rather sad, because I'm not interested in seeing the same characters constantly. And the monotony can't be good for keeping the artists' skills sharp either, you know? I would just like some variety.
I completely agree though. It's getting a bit exasperating.

Another thing I just thought of. With traditional auctions (silent auctions, ebay, etc) the point is for the consumer to possibly get the item at a lower price. With these art auctions, it seems to be the exact opposite. The artists seem to be using the auctions to get more money out of commissioners, and I think that's another reason why a lot of people are getting angry about it.

I've been on this side of the argument sense these damn YCH auctions started, and all I got from it was alotta heat. Least I'm not the only one that dislikes these un-custom over-priced art gigs. FEH. "It's speeding up the process of getting art done for the artists! You need to sketch it anyways, so your getting that done before the customer even pays" was the response I got. I replied with "There's no soul in it if it's just tossing the highest bidder in there." That was pretty much ignored for the efficiency of having half the work complete before purchase.

There's no reasoning with the people that are defending this shit-storm of artists who are lazy enough that they dont want to custom tailor art to their clientele.

If you half the price, then I can kinda see the appeal. You get it sooner, the artist has only bout half the work left to work with after getting paid, customer only pays bout half.. everyone wins. But when you end up paying MORE to have something that's not even what you requested.. well we all know how we feel bout that >:(

I don't know why these auctions have gotten so popular. I wouldn't mind if they were one flat price, but to auction a pose just seems silly.

If artist offered other things in conjuntion when a specific price is reached surelly it would be more interesing and fair to the commissioner.

Yup, pretty much. I remember when preposed pictures where "half-price" of a comission slot... aparently this not the case anymore.

I tend to agree with you on this one. I've seen one prepose go for 300$ when the artist's regular commission prices were around 75$ for the same picture type/quality. It blows my mind.

I also agree with that people can do what they want with their money. Personnally, though, I just don't understand why they would pay so much when they can get more pics of the same quality from the same artist for what they are willing to pay.

I check the price list before I bid so I know what the artist usually charges for a commish. If the bidding goes over what I am ready to pay, I wait for the artist to open commissions again. Just as simple. Besides, I really enjoy thinking about the pose I want and really like selecting it myself!

I remember seeing an image floating around the net saying that the industry standard for the level of some pictures is $500 plus for a full color rendered work. (Unfortunately my google-fu has failed me) This image of course had cited sources at the bottom and even told you where in those sources to look. The example they showed was easily one of the "$100" to "$200" commissions you spoke of.

Many (read nearly everyone) that has taken commission -far- undersells themselves in terms of effort to cost. Many artists are either working a second job or living off some other income because they easily make less than minimum wage. The idea that an artist cannot work the job that they want to full time because other people think so lowly of their work is insane.

So you know what? YCH are awesome, they're perfect for the indecisive and the people who want to help the artist actually make a living doing what they want to do instead of working as a burger flipper until they're to old to move.

In short: Artists work for peanuts, it's not fair to say 'you have to work harder for the same money.' Are you going to go up to construction workers and expect that they need to build 5 buildings to earn the same paycheck?

That being said it is frustrating to see artists completely close off commissions in favor of YCH auctions.

It's a good point and true, but why I am afraid to put up even one, tho when no one will commission you and you really need emergency money like you computer dieing all together and you know one auction is just not gonna bring in enough money to replace it, but then what do you do? That wasn't hypothetical either, I am really wondering what are other options I have without being a douche.

Hun I did and I do agree with everything you said, I guess I wonder from the pov from someone who hardly ever gets commissions at all, what else there is to do. I have also tried to do contests to give out free art but personally I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I really don't think auctions are a good idea to switch exclusively to anyway cuz eventually I foresee them drying out in the first place. I know some would say why I don't journal more and tell others my financial struggle, but another pet peeve of mine is artists who beg and plead constantly about woah is them and they need money for this and that. I am afraid that if I let others listen to my situations, it belittles theirs and thus runs others off. Actually I took a big step telling my current crisis, tho I don't think of like that..
