I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't understand why in China the new year starts on 09-02-2013 Love the new banner either way!

It's actually more appropriately called the "lunar new year" - ancient China followed a lunar calendar rather than the solar one most of the world follows today. :)

I only knew about the usual calendar and new year, which for us was on 01-01-2013. I feel silly for not knowing about the Chinese one until now that the "Year of the snake" thing was all over the net.

no need to feel silly. even if it's wise to assume there could be different calendars due to all the different cultures out there, how are we to know the specifics unless we find out or are told? especially since we're all so used to the gregorian calender, with it being used pretty much world-wide in some manner or another, there's rarely much cause to consider the alternatives. this page should probably have some info if you are interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_calendar but there are ofcourse more out there (even if they probably aren't used to the extent they once were). you might want to take a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_calendars and i can assure you that i know almost nothing about most of them, so don't feel bad :P

i don't know the specifics to be honest, but i think in terms of days and months it's not hugely different from what we are used to (usually 12 months and approximately 30 days to a month). i recommend taking a look at the section titled 'structure' within the first link i gave. there's a good chance it may be hard to follow at times, but maybe one of the other commenter can help better answer more specific questions? i wouldn't be able to answer much without just googling things myself :P

In a nutshell, the Chinese calender is based off lunar cycles. Searching "Lunar New Year" might help a bit more. :P

Rednef's pretty popular, actually. She has her own fanbase.

Which is humorous and all given she was created entirely as a disposable gag, but people loved her so much they made her stand out on her own and become part of the site. So, this is really the case where the userbase stepped up.

She is a nice scaly approach of the colors of Fender, yet with her very own design and concept.
It's well balanced, has presence and can be easily identified when seen.

It's, at the end of the day, a nice developed character. Just like Fender.

It was probably changed, due to copyright issues. The design was essentially Nuregami, god of water, from the Capcom game, Okami. They probably changed the colors to avoid lawsuits from Capcom.

Because of the Nanking massacre and it being a Japanese produced game with Chinese Zodiac characters. Capcom does not seem to care a lick about the usage of the characters. People have written to them with complaints about people making fursuits using the characters and names from the game. They told said people it was fine.

Actually, it's not *only* a Chinese holiday. Most Asian cultures celebrate it, as it is actually the Lunar New Year, so every culture with a base on a lunar calendar holds this holiday dear to their hearts.

I assumed based on the curled fingers that the snake was resting between her spread pointer and pinkie fingers. The middle and ring fingers are curled down. Or are you talking about her other hand?

Her left (viewer right). And if that were the case, you wouldn't be able to see her pinky. In the image, if that is her pinky, it is longer than her pointer. Even then, the snake would have to only be the width of two fingers. Unless she has her fingers spread but that would change the angle of the pointer and, again, the pinky would not be visible.

I figured it was just stylized, and the pinkie finger was longer (as I often see in artwork) it's been a trend in artwork lately to enhance features so that they're seen in completed images. Like, when someone draws a frontal view of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, but you can still see it's tail poking out about 2 inches from the side. It shouldn't be visible but people "stretch" the features to make them more visible for aesthetics. The tail thing is actually a -huge- pet peeve of mine, lol. The hands usually aren't a biggie for me. Thanks for explaining your viewpoint on this a bit more clearly :)

Hands are tough, so I can certainly see why it'd merit a knee-jerk reaction, especially when you pay so much attention to detail in them. Hands are almost like "second stars" of a picture. The hands are about as important as the face and the pose. Heck, back in the day Disney used to have animators work on nothing but HANDS. My Kindergarten teacher's hubby worked on Aladdin and all he did was Jafar's hands. Someone else did the face and body. You can really tell because there's soooo much personality in them.

You do realize there are other cultures on this planet and they don't all use the Gregorian calendar (our calendar, by the way)? Many calendars are based on the moon-cycles, with roughly 28 days for each month, and they have 12, sometimes 13, months in their year. (and the very word "month" is a nod to those old moon-cycles. Think "moonth", and you'll know what I mean) Much of Asia- not just China- uses the twelve-animal zodiac and they use a cycle of twelve years, each based on one of the animals. This year is the year of the Snake. When nearly two billion people use a calendar that is different from ours, it is not inconsequential- it's a major calendar usage.

Just the once. There was an "issue" with the color, for some users of the site, so it was changed by the original artist to remedy the situation.

The white/red snake was made to mimic a character from Okami, a Japanese game (albeit the characters in the game are based off Chinese zodiac), and since folks seem to think that the Lunar New Year is only celebrated by the Chinese, it was deemed "offensive" to include Japanese cultural influences in the image, because of the events during WWII that occurred in Nanking.

Sad that people would harbor that much hostility towards an obviously innocently intended image, but thankfully the artist was so willing to quickly alter the image for Dragoneer and the site.

I'm not sure as I've never played the game, but I know that was in no way the artist's intentions.. I believe that's all folks were upset about though, as from what I saw on site as well as from the artist who drew it, who is a friend of mine. There were at one point accusations that the artist wasn't "Asian enough" to draw such a piece, which I find amusing. They obviously don't know much about my friend. (Her signature to her traditional artwork is a seal of her name in traditional characters, or a Sticker of a seal of her name if the artwork is small.)
