Pokemon hipsters are the worst.
The 1st gen was great and all but not nearly the best...nor did pokemon start sucking afterwards. -.-
The greatest improvement to the game was during the 4th gen when useless pokemon became viable. Sure, some of the pokemon in the 5th gen can be questionable, but they brought along some ridiculously overpowered monsters and some badass designs as well.
In a casual sense, the game eventually became smoother with more "developed" plots and eventually a story...with a sequel.
Don't hate on non-1st gen pokemon. There are always gonna be trollish pokemon in each gen but with each gen comes more competitive goodness.
I mean...My favorite pokemon of all time is in the 1st gen (Hitmonchan). Not to mention some of OU monsters (Gengar, Alakazam, Gyarados, Dugtrio, etc.)
Don't call yourself a fan if you only like 16% of the actual series. =I
