looking to buy a tablet, opinions needed

oaky so i want to have something I can take around that is a little more portable than a laptop and doesnt die so soon like my phone. also I am easily disgruntled with using a mouse with sai and figured tablet would be a good way to go. any input on the matter is great as well as programs/apps to use would be much appreciated. Ideally I would like to keep it under $300
if you want something more portable and versatile, i suggest something like an blackberry tablet (200$) or an old version of the ipad. but i have neither so i cant tell which one are best.
