#345 - It's called responsible dog ownership

If you follow me on twitter or Facebook, you will have already seen this, but for the 75% of you who don't, here's a cross post from this evening:
It's called responsible dog ownership
Toby, my 3 year old Golden Retriever, got attacked by a pair of Boxers tonight. The owners of these dogs had let them off leash and were a walking at least a block ahead of them with a third leashed dog. The two off leash dogs were "boxing" outside Cera's house. Toby, The Monster, my friend Draykon and I were walking to the car. One of them broke away from the other and went for Toby's throat, the other followed and went for his flank. Draykon put himself between dogs and Monster then pulled the one off his flank. I kicked the lead dog off Toby's throat, in the face.
I'm not normally one to buy into Bully Breed sterotypes, but if you own one, and they're "play fighting", get them on a leash. And having them "usually" on a leash, is not the same as having them ON A LEASH. FFS being a city block away from your dogs is absolutely STUPID, especially when you can not recall your dogs to you. Animals are unpredictable! This is why we have leash laws and Off-Leash parks! If your dog can't go to an off leash park, then they shouldn't be off-leash on the street!
I'm not going to be responsible for that woman's vet bill. If I broke the dog's face it shouldn't have had it's mouth on Toby's throat.
As of right now, Toby is okay. He's resting next to my computer chair, and has relaxed. I can't thank Draykon enough for being there. I can't imagine what would have happened if it had just been Toby, The Monster and I, or how it would have gone if they had gone for The Monster instead of Toby. This night could have ended so much worse, and I have the fact there was someone else there to help me, to thank for that.
The next time you take your dog for a walk, please make sure you keep it on leash at all times. Off Leash parks are the only place you should ever have your animal off leash.
Thanks everyone for your time

Its just too sad the people who get dogs.
I haven't had any big dog breeds have a go at my dog and I while walking (Hell, my dog has made friends with off leash bullies breeds here), but I've had to step between my dog and a small, rat, white dog that charged mine, and went straight for his throat.
I stood between them, shoved the dog off with my foot, and basically stared the bloody rat down until it ran back to it's owners, who I then proceeded to give a hell of a warning to.
People need to learn that dogs need to be trained and under control >_<
Otherwise everyone suffers.
I've been bitten by more shitzus and chihuahuas than I've ever by "bully" breeds. The real problem are bad and irresponsible owners who don't commit to their animals and don't spend the time raising them to be polite. It's just like children! You teach them not to bite the other kids or the teacher sends them home and a social worker to go with it! xD
My dog got attacked at an off leash park once by a pit bull :<
Twas sad, since I /love/ pits! But the owner clearly had no idea what she was doing
But we've had times when our dogs have been attacked by other dogs and I was glad that it was my dad and myself with our dogs when it happened because my dad was able to help steer our dogs away and I helped keep the attacking dog away. never had to kick a dog in the face though.
Found the following on your local City website:
A dog is not allowed to run at large under any circumstances and must be on a leash when off the owner's property.
Where a dog has killed or injured any person or animal, or without provocation aggressively pursued or harassed any person or animal, an Animal Control Officer may deem the dog "dangerous" or seize the dog in cases of imminent threat to public safety.
A "dangerous dog" must be:
securely confined when on the owner's premises, and effectively muzzled, leashed, and under the care and control of a person competent to control the dog when off the owner's premises.
Glad that you are all okay!
I also feel your bane. I have a small dog and she is very well behaved around people but she is a little nervous around other dogs. I've learnt to spot quieter dogs (on leashes) and will walk her a little closer to these dogs to let her have a sniff at them and get used to other dogs.
I do make a point of sticking to paths at our local park so she has less of a chance of encountering off leash dogs (its not an off leash park but people do it anyways when it is quiet) there are some really well trained dogs that just stick around their owner or know not to go out of a certain boundary.
But at the same time there are so many dogs that do come charging at my little dog and scare the living bejebus out of her. She will show her teeth in defense when she is very frightened and then other owners will think I'm the crappy dog owner because my dog bared her teeth.... they seem completely oblivious to the fact that their bouncing flouncing puppy or big burly bully dog is getting in my dogs face with her tail between her legs!! Most of the time they can't even call their dog off mine either and cause my dog to growl!
I wish other dog people could at least have some courtesy/park etiquette or at least understand that some dogs are skittish and are easily frightened especially little dogs being frightened of big dogs. Only one woman I encountered seemed genuinely apologetic that her puppy great dane bull-dozed my dog.
