What is a good engine I can make HD sprite games in?
I posted this topic on the LBP forum I use but I am posting this topic here too just to cover more people.
Hi folk.
If some of you didn't know. I plan on trying my best to get into solo game creation outside of LBP. I still plan on playing LBP too. I don't believe in giving up 1 hobby for another tbh.
I got a question but not sure if anyone here has a answer. What would be the best game creation engine to make HD 2D sprite games on? I’m gonna laugh if any of you say LBP. Because LBP is way past terrible for making any type of sprite games for tons of reasons. So don’t bring that subject up even as a joke. Besides I also want to have the option of being able to sell my future games. *mew
I hear 2D games can actually be made in UDK with some effort. But I’ve no idea if that is a good idea to try or not. But yeah I don’t know what game engine to try out. Google is not being very helpful when looking up the subject imo.
For now I just want to start working on a fan-game project, it’ll still be HD sprites as I see no reason to start off on a small sized sprite game since I plan working on big sized ones later on anyways. Seems for some reason most good sprite game engines don’t support HD sprite sizes for whatever dumb reason, which is a shame since engines like MMF2 are pretty nice otherwise.
But yeah. Anybody know of anything good for what I need? Not sure this is the best forum to ask on but I no idea of where else to go. *mew

I'm no help, but if you find anything helpful would you mind sharing it with me? ^^;
Also. are you wanting the sprites to be HD too? If not then I already know a good handful of game engines you could use for classic Sonic game sized graphics.
I like the idea of sprites, but I thought making HD figures would be easier.

What I think you're looking for, but might not be able to use because I don't know how comfortable you are with programming (Also this really isn't a game engine, but could be used as one):

But yeah... basically I'd like to be able make a game like Odin Sphere. Now I'm not saying I am whatsoever good enough to make something that pretty haha. Just saying I want a game engine that can do something like it. And i know almost nothing about programing of course atm. :T
1) Polycode - Isn't out yet, but looks amazing, in every way.
2) Allegro.cc - Which was used to make Beat Hazard, which is a game that is actually on Steam and has HD sprites.

I hope to see how your game turns out, and let me know if you need to know anything more :3
But I did come across 2 things that looked promising. Construct 2 & Unity + the Unity 2D-toolkit. And I know full well coding is not a easy thing to do and that I kinda need a programmer. but there's nothing I can do about that unless I meet a person who is a programmer who'd be interested in working with me. But I don't think it would take me 3 to 4 years to find a engine that has some kind of easier way to program your games. I've been working on game projects on LBP series games for over 4 years and I've gotten crazy skilled at it. it has it's own type of somewhat easy to learn coding system. anyways thanks for the help. I looking into many things atm. I need to find what is possible for me. or start looking for somebody to help me if I got no choice. *mew
There has been promise that ubi-art frameworks would be open source, but it's been 2 years:

If you ever played Rayman Origins, that's the engine it runs on, and it looks buttery smooth. Like flash, but with raster images. I have a feeling they're waiting to release it till after Rayman Legends.
I wish I could try out something like this, cuz I'm decent at art, but when it comes to coding it makes my brain hurts. :<

The only thing tho is the free version limits the events so you can only make tiny games. If you want my key file, let me know (its just a plain text file). It's the personal edition.
Other than that it's got some really nice efx and the html games play right in the browser. Like flash, but tighter.
And it plays on the browser? You mean web browser? Is that all it plays on?... Or can it play on it's own pop-up window like most PC games do?
But yeah this thing sounds pretty nice. :) *mew
But oh well. I'm sure the projects will carry over in updates. (don't think I could update with this key tho.. hm..)
