Concert Review and My Experience

General
Went to see Shinedown, Three Days Grace, and P.O.D. last night.
Where do I begin? So much transpired. I'll just start from the beginning.
I won tickets through the only radio station I listen to: Rock 106.1. Not only did I win a pair of tickets and a Meet and Greet Photo Op, I also received a VIP Photo Pass where I could be up on stage with 3DG for 3 songs! Couldn't wait! Had to be at the Civic Center by 5:30 to make sure I get checked in to get the passes and all.
Started heading downtown with my buddy, Carson. Speeding in 5 o'clock traffic never gets you anywhere. We got free parking at The Mansion at Forsyth Park thanks to my friend Sybil. An extra long walk to the Civic Center but we saved some money by doing that. We ended up running to the CC just to try to make it on time. Talk about a pre workout before we end up jumping all over the place. Got there with time to spare. I met up with the DJ, Kotter from 106.1, to ensure I get the VIP Photo Pass and checked in to get the photo with 3DG. While we were waiting to go backstage we caught up with a friend who was also waiting in line.
Time to go backstage to get the photo with 3DG. Alright guys, form a straight line! I'm in front with Carson. Waiting some time before we actually go backstage. Then the concert manager (I believe) asked everyone who is the lucky guy with the VIP Photo Pass? I spoke up then she gave me directions on what to do when 3DG goes onstage. I still remember it, too. "Be at the right side of the stage and at any point go up to a security guard with the photo pass and he'll let you over the rail. Make sure you have your camera with you." But I don't have one, I said. "A camera phone will work." -.- I don't even have a phone at the moment. "Then I can't let you do this." My heart breaks and my stomach falls flat on the ground. I have no other choice but to give it away. Kotter asked if I was OK with this. "I don't want a VIP Photo Pass if I won't be able to use it." I didn't know how much time I had before we walked backstage so I handed to a guy and his wife that were also waiting in line with me. He offered me beer as a thanks. Whoop whoop, whatever. Wasn't worth it. Between the time I handed it to that guy and the time we did go backstage I had plenty of time to run back and give the photo pass to one of my other friends WITH a camera. I'm still kicking myself for doing that. I don't think I'll ever live it down. I'm sorry, guys.
So we finally went backstage to the photo op. More waiting but at least we got to hear P.O.D. practicing, testing the sound by playing Lost in Forever. Getting hyped up and still punching myself in the gut. Mixed emotions by this point. So Carson and I got the photo op with 3DG. A quick handshake with the band and 2 poses for the picture. Off you go! Next! Sometimes I wonder if it was even worth it. Then we got a pre-autographed paper from 3DG with their Transit of Venus tour stamped on it.
After we got the piece of paper I went back in line with Sybil and her sister. I needed a hug and told her what happened. I told her slap me cause of my idiocy. I gave the autographed paper to her sister. I have many other autographed items that I hardly know what to do with, already. So we chit chatted a bit til the line began to move. We were some of the first people to get inside. We were pretty close to the rail. Saw a few people I knew standing on the floor so I went to talk with them briefly. Got 2 bottles of water to keep myself hydrated so I wouldn't pass out during the show. There was a tower of speakers right above us. 24 of them to be exact and at the adjacent end were 24 more. While we were all standing there we overheard Tom Petty's Free Fallin' coming out of the tower of speakers. As the chorus of the song came around we all sung "And I'm Freeeeeee! Free BALLIN'" Got many kicks out of that and had some others around us joined in. Laughter from all around us. That was a moment you had to be there.
After some time I found the guy who I gave my pass to and took him up on the beer. He bought me 2. I went back and gave one to Sybil. Cheers! *Chug* Carson was done with his 2 by this time, also. Someone fainted just a few feet away from us. What? So soon? XD Don't worry, she was OK.
Lights go out and the stage is lit. The radio DJs came out and thanked everyone for coming out and threw some t-shirts into the crowd. Yay! Show's starting.
P.O.D.
I haven't seen these guys play since Ozzfest 2000. They're still great on stage! Sonny, the lead singer, cut off the dreads and lost a ton of weight. First song was Lost in Forever! "Let's play the newest single to get that piece of crap out of the way!" He didn't really say that but I know that's how most bands are! Everyone in the band was putting in 110%. They were great and Sonny hasn't lost his edge; moving everywhere on stage! Everyone was giving it their all! They played: Set It Off, Boom, a song from their new album, Youth of the Nation, SOUTHTOWN!! (my fave next to Youth of the Nation) then they ended their set with Alive. Amazing to see them again!
By this time I was one person away from the rail in front of the stage. Only had an asshole in front of me with his fugly girlfriend. These 2 were the kind of people that SHOULDN'T be breeding. Dumb, obnoxious, loud, rude and any other synonyms that may work. He even ducked back away from security to smoke in the middle of the crowd. Blowing smoke in everyone's face. DX< I get it. That's normal at concerts like this. I said a few words to him (none derogatory) in casual talk and he tells me he's just getting off probation. *smh* When either he or his girlfriend leaves to get a drink they always end up back in the front like it's their assigned standing position. People here are either too kind to let them back through or assholish enough to start crap. I didn't budge to let them in. They actually got around anyway as I was getting in closer. In fact, everyone was moving in closer cause Three Days Grace was coming up next.
Three Days Grace sans Adam Gontier who quit for personal reasons. In with Matt Walst, lead singer of My Darkest Days.
This is when things start to get out of hand. They started with (what do you know?) their first single off the new album: Chalk Outline. Still a good song and I could barely tell a difference between Adam and Matt's singing. Though throughout their set you could tell a difference at points but nothing majorly different. Props to Matt for learning the songs in a month's time. Their stage setup was amazing! Fire and flames shooting out of bio-hazard barrels during certain sings. I felt the heat from the flames! The whole stage was heavily influenced on the Fall Out video game. Their song set consisted of all of the radio hits: Animal I Have Become, Just Like You, Pain, Never Too Late, Break, World So Cold, The Good Life, Home, and Lost in You. During the songs, moshpits formed. I didn't mind getting caught in the middle of it! They're fun but I get worn out very quickly so I don't stay in them long. I paced myself here. Not as young as I used to be! During the moshes, some random girl was getting pissed! "Stop pushing me around, fuckers!" I said to myself: "Don't be on the floor if you don't want to get pushed around, fucking moron! At one point I had to break up a fight between her and another girl who was just rocking the hell out, just enjoying herself! Little ball of fire she was. This girl was shorter than my niece Kathryn! XD I believe she was the one starting these moshes. Almost fell in love!
There was a drum solo from Neil and a piano solo from Dani in between songs. They killed it! Just spectacular! People were beginning to chant "Riot" for them to play the song. The lead guitarist, Barry, came to talk to the crowd and to bring someone else on stage not technically part of the band. He heard the "Riot" chant and said "We'll get to that soon enough." I was confused when they brought this guy on stage. He's talking and asks the crowd if they ever hated anyone so much you wanted to break something. People cheered then you heard the beginning riff to Limp Bizkit's Break Stuff. I absolutely lost it!! I put the rest of my night's energy into that song! Moshing, pushing, jumping, flailing; I put in everything I had and sung the song all at the same time. I could've punched someone in the face and not even realized it! Could've been the breaking point of my voice but it all started with P.O.D. Three Days Grace finally ended their song set with Riot with more of me moshing, pushing, jumping, flailing! I was spent! Still had one more band to go through.
During the set change I kept hearing my name being called. Am I hearing things? I kept looking back and back and saw no one who wanted my attention but never decided to look up. I'm such a tard. It was my nieces: Kathryn, Amanda, and Brianna. I found this out AFTER the concert and I caught them just getting home. They told me they were screaming for me. XD
Shinedown
After 3DG left the stage a huge curtain dropped down with Shinedowns's logo on it. Didn't work quite well for the stage to be hidden cause I could see right through it. More people starting moving in closer. Some people don't how rock concerts work, apparently. Someone was screaming "This is a no moshpit zone!" I called BS because there's no telling what can happen. But if everyone agrees around you not to move around too much then I guess it's OK. But you can't just prevent a moshpit. I never seen such an angry crowd. It seemed like everyone had a bad attitude that night. Come here and enjoy the music! Cheez-Its! Everyone was bundling in. Yeah, I let a few short people move ahead of me. Cause they were polite and asked and they weren't plastered. But the tall guys pissed me off. There wasn't any room to fit a piece of paper between people and they are trying to step ahead of me. I just gave them a nasty look and they backed off except for one jerk who stepped right in front of me like he fit ignoring that I was even there. It was during a song by Shinedown and just screamed lyrics in his ear.
My feet and legs were really aching by this point. Head was sweaty but my body was still cool because of my faux silk shirt; it was still dry, too. Sybil and I were trying to stick together. We never strayed too far. Carson disappeared on everyone. We caught up with him eventually. I didn't pay much attention to Shinedown to tell you the truth. They played all there hit songs, of course, and they were very much alive onstage. I never saw them in person before. Once I did, I found out they were a bunch of Hipsters! Or at least dressed like them. Still doesn't change the fact that they did rock out. I thought Shinedown would cause much more of a ruckus than expected. Everyone wanted to stand around. I guess 3DG took most of the energy.
There was this asshole who was standing all by himself and he kept looking at his phone. And he kept pushing the guy in front of him, which was next to me, to squish the people of front of that guy then went back to his phone. It got sickening cause he was the only one doing this. He eventually got escorted out by police for being a drunken dick. Sybil and I decided it was a good time to get out of there and take a cigarette break. We took the break and decided to return inside to watch from the side where no one was against us where her sister was. They played Lynyard Skynyrd's Simple Kind of Man acoustically. The lead singer sounded -really- good. Props. They played a couple more songs that I can't recall. Then they closed the show with there song Bully which I really liked.
And that's it? Show's over? NO FREAKIN ENCORE FROM ANY BAND!!? BOOO!!! (Just a nitpick on my end)
The concert as whole was great! I have no voice at all to prove it.
Goes to show you how much the Savannah crowd sucks. I couldn't stand the people there. Next time I'll be -sitting- close instead of -standing- close.
There have been many concerts I went out of town for and had a great time. The people there were great. Some people can be annoying at times but I never experienced an assholish, controlling filled crowd such as Savannah's.
Savannah! Get your act together! Never come here for a rock concert.
And I'm leaving for FWA tomorrow afternoon. This week has been crazy and going to get crazier this weekend! I'll see y'all there!
