While I'm very happy for the spotlight artist, I feel this announcement is very inappropriate.

If they were doing something such as, say, giving their profits to charity or some other constructive cause? Then yes, that's a fair use of this space.
That doesn't appear to be the case here.

Please re-think your decision here. You could be wandering down a path to elitist promotions of close friends and contacts of the FA heads.

We'll be doing more communitiy spotlights in the future, priasing those who go out of their way to help sick kids, raise money for charity and more. This is just one of a ew coming down the pipe.

Community outreach is good, and promoting the benefits of the fandom is one. =) I've been drafting up a Spotlight post for convention charities, and you'll see that soon.

That would be nice- and thanks for being a sport and replying. :) I hope it came through that I'm worried for you and not mad at you.

A keen spotlight, if you'd ever be open to the idea, could be highlighting members ya'll think have great skill but are under-watched. I'm sure that's probably come up at some point though, haha.

More on this will be coming soon, along with a section dedicated to some monthly spotlights as part of some upcoming changes. We really want to focus on the good aspects of the community, and feel a lot of users's stories need to be told -- most notably those who go out of their way to make the fandom a better palce.

No. We'll be looking at furries who make the news, do expectional things to promote wellbeing. Not just who, but the actions they exhibit. I am firmly against the "just stick to popular people". I often draw attention towards artists that don't have large followings because I feel they need the attention and praise.

There's no point in spotlighting the famous ones already.

Yep as it seems to me that some like to spotlight famous furries in their journals and other things just because of them being popular.

I've not seen this happen, actually. All of the journals I've ever seen spotlighting were of artists that didn't have too much of a following.

Despite what you may think from the watch count, Fable really isn't all that actively followed. She did some really cheap commissions and had trouble filling even 5 slots. :X Many of her watchers are from ages ago when she had an FA banner and those people have since changed accounts or left FA during a period of inactivity on her part *can only guess* But yeah, she's a nice gal but not especially popular. Tons of people have her shirts and many don't realize she's an active member here on FA ^_^;

I was actually going to say, 1000 or so watchers isn't popular, not even close. It's a good amount, sure! And of course, every watch counts. But real favouritism would be featuring those with 3-4 thousand and over. You don't get much attention at 1000, I mean, I didn't back then, it was a struggle to sell things.

Mmmhm, it's a real nightmare trying to social network in addition to actually doing art for others and trying to keep a real income going. I'm one of Fable's closer friends and I've been doing everything I can to help and the amount of effort I'm doing alone is making my head spin. XD Getting close to 10k I see. Good luck. ^_^

How long was she inactive for? Also I wonder if FA could somehow make something that figures out which of a users watchers are actually active on FA?

That would be really cool - If a user hasn't been logged in in at least 3 months, they don't show on the watcher count. :3 Or it's 45 / 70 part/total. :3

I was more of thinking that would be just so the user can know about their watchers but not have it affect the numbers seen by others and not make that info seen by others. The point of that would be so a user can see if maybe their watchers are not paying attention to them or if just a lot of them are inactive.

I suggested that to DA and was told I was being "OCD". LOL

Only in the more recent years are people starting to realize that only like....50% or less of watchers are even active. :T

I'd say majority of art sites have some form of artist spot light or popular section.

DeviantArt has had one since as long as I can remember.

You do realize this has been going on for sites going back decades and more, yes? And we're also going to be just highlighting good things artists and community memebers have been doing in general to help raise awareness that there are furries out there who do good business, run small businesses, charity work and more

Er, what? It would only be favoritism if FableFire was friends with the admins or they had some monetary connection with FA. And even if they were friends, their t-shirt designs are cute and the t-shirts themselves are of good quality. I own three.

I don't get why people have to be so negative about something that is supposed to highlight someone with a very small following and could use an extra boost. Contrary to what some folks think, 1,000 watchers is practically nothing when you're trying to make sales.

Pretty much my thoughts on it.

Lots of people were talking about popularity and such, but what? I mean, if you have, say, 100 watchers, then ya, 1000 seems like a lot, but in reality it really isn't at all, not enough to make money with for most. Not to forget many accounts are doubles or unused.

A spotlight happens on a free website and whether its posted or not doesn't need to affect anyone. Yet people sill whine and let it affect them and complain that it's not them and the fact they will never be popular and all that crap. Seriously can't please anyone, right?

I think it's cool to help and reward people that work hard so they can get some appreciation. And FableFire's shirts are clever and cute, this is well deserved!

while not a bad idea.. if you wanted to give all artists a chance to be noticed. maybe simply have a random art button. with a tag system of course.
and I'm thinking it will generate a page of various artwork from different people. so no matter how small your art page is there's a chance someone will see something they like from you. ;3

I've been reading all of these comments, and I can only say one thing. "Oh Furries, you never change~"

It dose seem bias, and unfair to every other artist out in the community considering there are tons of people who need the credit more then Fablefire.

If you really wanna pay tribute to furries who have done good by the community I think the first person who should be Our own Uncle kagi.

He STARTED the first con in Albany NY In 1990's I know I was their with my Sitter "Whanetta Chowchow" when i was tot. Kagi Is not only one of the founders of the community when started to become the community it is today but, continues to run the largest con in the world has organized SO many events and charities.

The fact he is not first person recognized is kinda rude.

Yes Fable may have done some cool thing's, and is an AMAZING ARTIST. In comparison to what the roach has done, I really think we should honoring him before anyone else.

Then we should get the name of every person whom is con staff. Many people don't know Just how much work people like kagi, KP, YES Even neer has to deal with as a convention staff.

What about the site it's self? I remember when Fa wasn't owned by neer. As much as Neer and I have our diferances He should be up there as well before fable for YEARS of hard work to help keep the site you all fuss and crazy over running FOR FREE because frankly I know Every person here could say thank's to neer and all the staff.

Alot of people don't realize cause of the slow responces from admins, and glitches what a great thing we all have here. Stop and think With out FA HOW many of the friends you have today would you even know? All that art you get from artist on the site? Imagen A life with out the FA site. I know i would have lost about 8 years of my life, I would be different person. I never would have found my first boyfriend, or found a place I felt as if I could for the first time be around others and not be embarrassed.

If it weren't for these people Only a small handfull of you would even know what furry is.

These are the people we should honoring.

What about the THOUSANDS A PONE THOUSANDS dollars raised by the conventions? There is someone who organizes that, and the the most part actually do something for the communities and not just there pockets to make a living. Sad thing is these people for the most part are not artist, suit maker, suit, or even a popular character. They get on to FA and have like 30 watchers and are watching 1k+ people.

THESE people do more for you then you even know, and we all for the most part forget them and give the credit to people who we think deserves it.
