While I think the reasons you've heard are worse than mine, they reminded me of an exchange I once heard between a coworker (who wasn't being serious) and a manager (also jokingly serious)

C: But... they'll die!
M: *looks him straight in the eye.* Let. them. Die.

The stupidest reason for me to hear was,
"I'm calling in because I found out my dog was matted and I have to take him to a groomer's."

"We work at a petstore, ----. Take him to the groomers here."

"...oh."

Fucking stupid. Regardless, he didn't show up.

Have to add another one I just remembered, back in ye olden school days. it's not just an "excuse" as such, but stupid:

- I can't come to school today, because my turtle is sick.
- Uhm, okay?
- I need to take it to a vet, do you have a driver's license?
- Nope, plus... I'm in school right now?
- But do you have a car so you can drive me?

One of the Tech Support supervisors didn't come in for two weeks because his daughter had broken a finger. Needless to say, he wasn't with us for very long.

a broken finger? really? as I recall kids still turned up for class with their broken leg in a cast. classmates always helped out carrying stuff. broken finger!?

Guy above was the first person to go when we had to cut down on staff. He made stupid excuses all the time. "I had a nightmare", "I'm feeling sad", "I'm stressed out by all the work that has piled up while I was home and depressed." It was like talking to a highschool emo.

essentially... he stayed home for shit reasons and then called in more sick because of the heaps of work he'd have to do when he came back...

Not to mention that it was his daughter that had the broken finger. WTF?! What does THAT have to do with him? What the heck was he doing all that time? Kissing and massaging the finger? Reading stories to make it feel better?

I work on ships, there's no way to avoid your duty. They will come and check for you personally in the cabin.

My husband once called in dead after he was told he wasn't allowed to call in sick "unless you're dieing" of course it was a little chain place and the manger was one of his friends so it was only a joke.

Pipe burst in my yard, then had one tire blow, then the spare blow, then my son was kicked out of after school program, then the house was robbed. All in about a two week stint.

Oh, I'm sorry - excuse, sorry. This actually happened. I collected up the receipts and police reports and write-ups just in case and had them in my car.
