The way to solve it is to say "Would the other guy tell me that the path on the left leads to certain death?" If the guy asked says, "Yes," then the other path leads to certain death and the one on the left leads to the correct path. If the person asked is the liar, then the real answer is "No," the left path doesn't lead to certain death. If the person asked is the truth teller, then the other guy would be lying and the answer would still be "No." It's really confusing, but it makes sense if you think about it long enough.
