New Commission Information
17 years ago
I've updated my commission information and included a copy of it here. Major changes include new prices and a reminder that I accept limited traditional and adult commissions as well, as well as a special note to WoW players.

THE "WAITLIST"
Commission "Waitlist" - http://jocarra.deviantart.com/journal/15449847/
Please note that commissions are not handled in a first come, first served basis; however, those who have spoken to me before will likely be chosen before those who have not.
Clients are chosen based on how long they've been waiting, how much their ideas appeal to me, how well-suited I feel I am to complete the illustration, how polite and reasonable the client seems, how much time I have versus how much time the commission requires to be done well, and how much money I need versus how much money the client is willing to pay.
Basically, clients are picked based on a variety of issues with intent to be as fair as possible to both client and myself.
The "waitlist" serves to help me keep track of who has asked me, and what their request was.
* * *
THE PROCESS
1. Check my commission status to see if I'm open and have slots available.
* If I'm closed or full, you can still ask to be put on the wait list for future consideration.
2. Contact me via the website, email, or MSN Messenger.
* Include a description of what you want (portrait? full-body? illustration w/background?), describing desired medium (digital? graphite?), style (sketchy? line art? cartoony? semi-realistic? photorealistic?) and approximate image size (pixels or inches).
* I will respond with any clarifying questions and a rough price estimate.
* Note about MSN: Please introduce yourself and your interest in commissions when you add me. It helps me to distinguish a potential client from a random fan or complete stranger. Thank you.
3. Assuming I accept your commission, I will give you an ordered commission slot, and we will make a final decision on image details and the price.
* Price changes made after I've started working on your commissions are not allowed. There are very few exceptions to this.
* I generally do commissions in order of slots. There are a few exceptions: if you're not ready to pay the advance when your turn comes up, you keep a slot, but are bumped down in favour of the person who was below you.
4. Once I get to your commission slot, I will notify you and begin work on a conceptual sketch of your idea.
* I'll send the sketch to you, and we'll talk, and make any major revisions.
* Note that this is the last chance you get to change any major details (style, composition, etc.)! I will not repaint an image because you've changed your mind about something.
* REFERENCES! As people like my realistic work, or want something very specific, I require references in order to do my job properly. Any references you can get for me of your character or any other details is GREATLY appreciated.
5. Once you're happy with the conceptual sketch, I'll ask you to send me a 50% advance payment to my PayPal address: jocarra[at]gmail.com
* The advance is non-refundable. The only exception is if I am unable to complete your commission due to my own personal error/problems.
* If you have not paid my advance, I may choose to not work on your commission until you do.
6. You can track my progress via my dA journal. Alternatively (and more accurately), you may keep in touch with me via email or MSN Messenger.
* In most cases, I work slowly. Your patience is greatly appreciated as I balance two part-time jobs and a personal life with my art commissions.
* I often have work-in-progress images available, which I will post, or you can request via email/Messenger.
7. Upon completion, I will send you a preview image of the finished piece and ask for the remaining 50% payment.
* In most cases, I will refuse to send you the final image until I have been paid in full.
* Upon payment, I will send you the final, full-sized image.
* * *
IMPORTANT RULES
* I only accept payment via Paypal unless you live in my immediate vicinity.
* You tell me the image, I tell you the price. You change the image, I can change the price.
* I must be able to contact you reliably via dA/SA/FA/Darknest, email, or MSN Messenger.
* Your characters/story belong to you, while I reserve the rights to the product. This means you cannot sell copies of my artwork, or use it for any commercial purposes.
* You must understand I can take a long time, as my primary income comes from two other jobs, neither of which are related to art. Your patience is appreciated.
* * *
WHAT I WON'T DO
With few exceptions, I generally do NOT do the following...
* 3D renders/fractals.
* Terragen.
* Flash movies.
* Complex animations.
* Web layouts.
* Abstract art.
* Urban/cyberpunk.
* Technical/mechanical drawings.
* Oil/watercolour/acrylic paintings.
* Charcoal drawings.
* Sculptures.
* Matting/framing.
* * *
WHAT I WILL DO
I can draw/paint anything if I have a reference. However, I am BETTER at some things than others, and definitely have my preferences in what I WANT/ENJOY as far as commissions go.
This is the basis on which I choose clients: for example, I'm much more likely to accept a painting of a wolf sitting in the rain, or two dragons fighting in the sky, than a picture of a goth punk smoking pot in an alleyway.
I will/can do any of the following...
* Animals, anthros, furries, other beasts/creatures...
* Humans, elves, other humanoids...
* Erotica, nudity, sex...
* Scalable vector line art and illustrations...
* Tattoo/tribal designs...
* Avatars, icons, animated GIFs...
* Photomanipulations...
* Backgrounds, landscapes, skyscapes...
* Realism, pseudo/semi-realism...
* Cartoons, lineart, cellshading...
* Morphs between images...
* Graphite work...
* Marker work...
* Chalk pastel work...
* Rough sketches
* * *

Special Notes: TRADITIONAL
* I generally won't accept commissions for complex traditional artwork due to time and money constraints.
* I will happily accept cheap commissions for pen sketches.
* In the case of a traditional commission, you are responsible for paying all material costs as well as any required shipping and handling.
* * *
Special Notes: ADULT
* I do take adult commissions.
* You must be legal.
* Subject matter must not include blatantly underaged individuals - this is the one preference I'd like to stick to.
* Other than that, I'm very open about these things, and you may feel very comfortable in describing to me what you want. However, that doesn't guarantee I will be interested.
* * *
Special Notes: WoW PLAYERS
* If you play on the N. American server MAELSTROM, I am willing to do commissions for gold.

Hm..I'm currently taking trades and requests, but lately, I've been thinking about doing commissions. When you do yours, do you accept checks, paypal, or cash? I guess I'm kinda holding off on the commissions for those reasons - not knowing which is best.
Also, for a beginner, what would be the appropriate price for artwork (like traditional work)?
Cash only works well for local transactions. It's usually illegal to mail cash international, I believe. Anyway, it involves a lot of hassle. Same with money orders and bank transfers. I'm not sure about cheques.
Traditional work (especially high quality work, and cases where you're selling the actual original) is almost always more expensive in general than digital.
What prices you pick depend on 2 things:
- How much people are WILLING to spend - unless you have a large fan base, you probably won't be able to charge the full value of your art. Once you DO have a large fan base, then you can often start charging MORE than the "actual" value of your art, simply because it's popular.
- How much your work is "objectively" worth - the best way to discern this is to look at what other people charge, and how much art sells around your town locally, and compare it to your own work.
When I first started, I charged $30 for http://jocarra.deviantart.com/art/C.....Shelby-9749025 (the original). I would now charge about $120.
Compare it to "high-end/popular" artists: http://saimain.deviantart.com/art/P.....kaboo-92802149 ($100-200 for a sketch, and up to $800 for a full illustration) and http://goldenwolf.deviantart.com/ar.....-King-60637407 ($400-600 , ~$50/hour). I personally think they're charging a bit much... But some professional digital painters sell their work for no less than $1000. If you do modern/contemporary/abstract art, you may be able to sell a mediocre oil 6x8 painting for $100-200 easily.
I was told I should not be charging any less than $100 for ANY of my work. I do, anyways, even with my new prices. My average price for a good painting was $40-70. However, I was undercharging. I'm trying to push the average price to around $80-100.
Most beginners I've seen around doing commissions range in prices from $5-30/image, depending on how good they are, and how well established, as I've said.
