New Journal for March
Given that my new years journal promised at least 12 journals this year, I'm not technically behind schedule, but since the original intent was to post a journal every month, I wanted to make sure this goes up before the end of March!
(I know my artwork is also way behind schedule, but would like to think I can still catch up)
This month I, Kaffre Kitten, have:
- Participated in my very first Swapsies! (though my picture is still pending)
- Received my PT copy of "Antagonists" for ArM5!
- Learned that chickens will, in fact, eat a potato!
- Spent nearly $40 on candy... :embarrassed) Don't worry it's not all for me!
Also with Easter being extra-early this year, I've a question for everyfur: While the Easter bunny is usually depicted as a rabbit (cuniculus), I've heard that originally, the hare (lepus) was associated with the holiday - though admittedly I can't remember where - which species do you think he/she/it is?

As for the traditional Easter Bunny being a hare, I wouldn't know for sure, but it would make sense.
Of course, this is complicated somewhat by the fact that many species colloquially referred to as "Rabbits", (Jackrabbits, for example), are in fact hares and vice versa. For what it's worth, I'm not upset at all, I just thought it would be an entertaining topic of conversation on a furry forum! ^^
Also, guess It's a regular rabbit not a hare that is connected with Easter, just like Tacki said.
All I know for user is that I tend to wait until after the holidays to get the "seasonal items" (such as Easter candy) on good markdown clearance deals at stores after the holiday has passed (lol)
As the days get longer following the Vernal Equinox, many animal species started to enter their annual mating frenzy "Estrus" and thus the bunnies acted as a symbol of fecundity that people wanted their families and livestock to emulate.
With the arrival of Christianity, the holiday took on a different character, but the main themes of fertility and reincarnation remained.
Anyway, sorry for the longwinded explanation. Enjoy many candies! *hug*
No worries about the long winded part... matter of fact, it wasn't really that long anywho.
And, yeah... interesting to learn where in heck human beings came up with some of these specif times of year we still celebrate, and even the specific way we go about celebrating them.
^.^
And, cool! Now is that a whole potato they will peck at to eat? Or is it one that is all mashed up? I think it would be cool to see a chicken have at a whole otato and peck it apart like a piece of bread until they get all they want.
And, speaking of chickens, did you see "Double Rainboom" yet? There is a great chicken reference to Scootaloo in it. :)
As for the potato-things: Both.
I've known for a while that they'll eat potato-peels and such since we occasionally give them kitchen scraps, but I was still quite surprised by their piranha-like attack on a whole potato I was instructed to give them a few days ago.
Yesterday, however, I found some a baggy of frozen tomatoes at the back of the freezer and threw that out for them (still frozen) - It was gone in a matter of minutes. We feed them quite well and there's always grain left in their feeding pans in the morning for example, but they still attack any unexpected treats with tremendous enthusiasm...
I've not seen "Double Rainboom" yet. I tend to stick to official stuff - not out of any sort of haughtiness, but rather because - while I check EqD every few days, I don't really tend to follow movements within the fandom so I don't know about a lot of fan-works. Also, my data usage for the month is already over so I'd have to wait till April anyway... :(
That is so cool to here what chickens are capable of. It's even more cool to hear you and your family raise them. Do you guys have a small farm going on? Or do you just raise chickens for eggs and poultry? I think it'd be fun to raise chickens and even more fun to see the "piranha attack" on a potato. :) That's YouTube material! :)
Hope you've been having a happy Easter, Kaffre. :)
We've raised chickens and turkeys for meat in the past as well, but don't own any at the moment - (the hatchery starts taking orders soon though so that might change).
Also, having typed "Chickens" and "Feeding-Frenzy" into google, there are already plent of videos showing what they're capable of - I guess I'm just really naive about their appetites...
And, now that you mention it, I really want to see a feeding frenzy and, shortly, shall have to look one up. Especially against a potato. :)
Hope you are well and the job search is treating you fair, Kaffre. :) Be Yoshi!
