I was trying to use an avatar I made with a transparent background, but it keeps showing up black! I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING WRONG AND STUFF

I've tried png and gif but they both aren't working. :I
Download Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com) and save the pic as a gif image, immediately it will ask you which colour do you want it to be transparent.
Yeah, I went ahead and played it with a guide. So impatient. u_u
Try using Irfanview!
Your only choice is to use a GIF. You can make a trasparency but you're much better off selecting a color as transparent background, every browser is compatible with that.
if it's older, switch to image ready and save for web from there.
photoshop tends to ignore the transparent area when you just "save as..."
