I'd try being consistent, but if the higher ups don't recognize it and I couldn't stand it anymore, I'd keep working but throw out some applications and see if I can catch something better while holding my job just in case there's no luck. I've done this before and it's possible I might be in this type of situation again.

Some peoples true selves can be annoying. I know from experiencing a few that can't keep their opinions in. I personally know someone that goes on rants about about politics.
My current true self would be way too much for most people.
I actually restrain myself from going as far as I want to with certain things such as things I say that can start problems that take up more time than I feel like committing myself to.
I choose not to be as strange as I want to be at the work place. I actually experimented with this.
There's just limits to certain things in certain places. This can actually be a good thing though. I can save certain things for certain audiences.
