Ask me a thing!

I need something to temper today's ad hell at work, so sons and daughters, let's 'rap'. I'll be poking my head in throughout the day to answer questions.

Jamie Velasquez is probably my most favorite in general, though.
If you had the money, would you start your own company?
How long does it take you to do a completely finished painting, from start to finish?
How did you become interested in the FBA?
Has being an artist always been your ambition, or was there any point you wanted to choose a different career path?
What is life like as a professional artist?
If you could meet any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Do you still draw adult related stuff for yourself?
What is it about Ginyu Force and Arlong that you liked?
How did you originally come up with Pride of Life?
Is Africa a country or a continent?
Can commission a picture (when you open) of my character meeting you and fainting?
1) I would have to say the most challenge commission was probably the painted portrait I did for Tabra about two years ago. I really had no idea what I was doing, but I guess it worked out.
2) Probably not.
3) It depends on the complexity of the piece. I can usually knock out a bust portrait in a week or two, but if I'm doing a full portrait with background and all the whistles, it can be up to 2-3 months.
4) I think I first came across a piece by blue-paper blue-paper a few years ago, which piqued my curiosity. I rather like animal athletes (I blame Zoolympics and the League Before Time milk caps), so I enjoyed the content almost immediately, despite not really knowing about basketball other than the basic get-the-ball-in-the-hoop stuff. From there, I saw pieces done by my friend
5) I really only got into art because everyone assumed that because I liked to draw, I wanted to be an artist. I enjoyed drawing, so I just went with it. I really don't know what I would have done if I didn't get into art.
6) In the instances when I've worked on game teams, it was stressful but fun, and I generally got a lot out of the experience. At the moment, I'm in both marketing and localization, which is mostly either boring or stressful. I do get to exercise and expand my graphic design skills, though, so that's something.
7) I think I'm split between Peter Laird (one of the co-creators of the Ninja Turtles) and Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball). The works of both were a big influence in my childhood and teenage years, respectively, though I don't know if I want to meet them as much as I'd just like to see them in person.
8) Not really. I never drew much adult stuff to begin with, but it all but dried up after I got all relationshipped with :d.chestnut:. XD
9) I looooooooooove that they're such gigantic goofball villains, but moreso because they each have distinct personalities and their own philosophy as a group, which is really refreshing among the sea of gonna-destroy-all-the-things jackasses in the DBZ universe,
10) Oh God, I really don't even know anymore. I think I just wanted to write an anthro shonen comic originally, but then I eventually grew out of my weeaboo phase and just ended up doing whatever I found fun.
11) Africa is a continent made up of many, many countries inhabited by countless cultures. It's actually a little bit of a pet peeve of mine when people don't realize that much about Africa. Honestly, watch a NatGeo documentary sometime, folks.
12) Maybe! I've actually been cutting down on first-come, first-serve commissions in favor of raffles to give more people a shot at slots, but I guess we'll see!
HOW DARE YOU
Where?? D:
No seriously though. If you could be any character you wanted, who would it be and why?
Hm, I think I might like to be Wuffle. He seems like a pretty swell guy, and his helpful attitude sits pretty well with me.
How was it coming out to you family? I'm always curious to hear about the experiences of other ladies of color.
How do you adult???
2) It went surprisingly well with both parents. I was expecting a big fall out, but they were just kind of like, "Ok, we still love you," and we hugged and life went on. That is, until I actually went on my first date. I guess my mom thought I wasn't serious, and came home the next day with a stack of HIV and STI statistics she'd printed off the internet (a very big WTF moment at the time, but I later realized that she was just worried about me), then spent the next few years trying to convince me that maybe it was time to get a boyfriend whenever things with whoever I might have been dating didn't work out. She's since come around after meeting
Things in general were pretty fine with my dad until I introduced him to DC for the first time, and he tried to pull me aside to discuss 'some things' (which in my dad's language means an hour-long lecture on why I shouldn't be engaging in the homo without explicitly saying so) WHILE she was standing right next to him. Our relationship was pretty strained for a while after that, but I eventually let him know that he didn't have to be happy for us, but the reality of the situation was that we are together, we're going to be a family, and let him know that if he wanted to be a part of my family, he would have a place with us. It took him about two years, but he's slowly been coming around (he mailed the both of us Christmas packages two winters ago, and occasionally asks how DC is). I think my parents were just genuinely worried for my safety, but it often came out wrong at times. I read an op-ed a few months ago, saying something to the effect of 'if it takes gay people years to come to terms with who they are, why shouldn't they expect the same of their parents?', so I've also tried to understand their feelings (my dad's, in particular), even if they don't have any bearing on my relationship.
3) OMG, I feel like I only JUST became an adult last year (I'm on the cusp on 28, btw). After I popped the question to DC (she accepted), I thought, 'Oh snap, we're gonna be a family. Guess I better stop dicking around and make a decent home for us or something. D:' I also started sporting a new hairstyle that makes me look less like a 14-year old girl (I'm 5'2" with child-like hands and petite facial features), so I'm feeling like a natural woman. XD
How come you hated Delaware's program? ;w;
Do you have any favorite authors? Narrative and comic wise?
If you were to do an illustration for a book cover (I'm curious), what would be the cost and rights?
2) I didn't hate it, I just didn't take away very much from it. I can count on one hand the courses that had any real impact on my overall technical skills and/or mindset as an artist, and during the time I went, it was still a very new school (only running for about 10 years) with plenty of kinks to iron out.
3) Sadly, I don't read nearly as much as I used to, but I remember R.L. Stein being one of my favorites a kid (specifically his "Goosebumps" series). More recently, David Duncan's has swayed me with "The Jaguar Knights". I enjoy his ability to convey his characters' thoughts and feelings in very few words. On comics, Jeff Smith of "Bone" fame, Ryan North ("Dinosaur Comics), and Zachary Braun ("Nature of Nature's Art) are strongly favored.
4) I like to leave commercial discussions to email, so please feel free to shoot one over and I'll gladly send some general info. :)
Is there something you find overrated?
Are there some places in the world you would like to visit?
What is your favorite Pokemon if you have any? |D
2) I dunno... Console games, maybe? They've just been a very ho-hum experience for me for the past decade, though I could probably attribute that to my shifting tastes.
3) I super duper want to visit Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. I might also like to either of the Busch Gardens parks.
4) Alakazam, forever and always. Electabuzz is a close second.
