veganism is about cutting out what you can with as much effort as you can. I still have leather shoes, unfortunately, because I bought them second hand before I was totally vegan. they're the best pair of shoes I have and I can't afford another, right now. doesn't make me not vegan.
dogs exist. we brought them into this world, so we have an obligation to take care of them. same for cats. seeing as cats, especially, are obligate carnivores, this means some animals have to die to feed them. that doesn't make you a bad person or not a vegan.

although I've been looking into alternative diets for dogs, they're not vegan diets. just less harmful overall. if you'd like me to share the information when I'm done researching (might be a while, there's not a lot of information about it available), I'll gladly send it your way.

i just feel as if the fact that i plan to continually use meat products to feed dogs, i'm making what's really not the most ethical choice. i would never give up my dogs, but i know that i plan to have more in the future, and so i will continue to cause the deaths of animals through this decision. i still use animal products that i purchased previously, i don't see how throwing them out would do much good since i already paid for them, but the fact of the matter is i am continually killing animals to feed my dogs. i could decide not to own any more dogs, and thereby stop killing anymore animals, but at this point i'm not prepared to make that decision.

i do give my dogs carbs, mostly because at the moment it's what i can afford. it's not as healthy but if i don't have enough meat to fill their stomachs cooked rice serves as easy empty calories and cheap vitamins make up for what they're lacking. i don't think dogs need to be on an entirely meat diet, "BARF" type diets seem to work really well, but i do think meat should make up the bulk of it. that's my feelings on it at the moment but i'd definitely love to read up on anything you've got to show me, if i can evolve my knowledge to reduce harm i'd always love to know.

I don't consider that non-vegan. You're vegan, your animals are carnivores. If they eat animal product then ethically, animal product is what they should be given. TBH, I really hate it when people make vegans and vegetarians out of animals that aren't naturally so, considering that there are vegan and vegetarian diet pets. You could consider switching to local bought grassfed free range raw? While this might seem a bit of an odd suggestion it wouldn't be supporting the intensive overfarming and poor conditions that can occur commercially while allowing you to sustain your pets in a healthier, friendlier, more eco-friendly way

most of what my dogs eat is actually stuff i kill myself or get off local hunters when they clean old stuff out of their freezers and whatnot, i try really hard not to get any farmed meats at all, though of course sometimes it has to be done.

i just feel like the more morally responsible decision would be to stop acquiring carnivorous pets and stick to herbivorous animals but i just don't bond with any other creature on earth the way i do with dogs, i'd constantly feel as though my life was incomplete without them.

IMO the morally responsible decision is to feed your animals what they're supposed to eat. You're vegan. Your pets are not vegan. You're feeding them appropriately according to what they are. IMO, you're just being a responsible and open minded vegan

The moral thing would be to not keep carnivorous pets is what I am saying. Not get rid of the ones you have, just make the choice to not keep any more.

Honestly, that's up to you. Like I said before, I don't think it's moral taboo to have carnivorous pets if you're vegan. But I can't pretend to know how this feels to you, as I am not vegan. However you feel, I just hope you're happy at the end of the day, man.

Thanks, I know it probably sounds weird, lol. I've just become overwhelmingly empathetic at a recent point in my life, it's difficult to justify causing any other beings harm anymore, even to my own detriment, though I'm not trying to convince anybody else to feel the way I feel. I get enormous personal satisfaction from knowing I do as little harm to others as possible.
