Everyone should buy a diesel.

I've had my new diesel bug for over a month now. Including the trip back from Indie where we bought it it's gone 500 miles on one tank of fuel.
500. Fucking. Miles. Today was the first day in a entire month I had to put fuel in it.
Why the fuck did I not have a diesel before? All the road-trips I've missed out on! I WILL DRIVE EVERYWHERE MEOW.

Man... You'd be in the next century before you remembered your car actually ran on fuel.
I'll get tired of this car long before it breaks down.
Regular gas in my area is about 3.50 a gallon. A regular gas car only gets about 20-25 miles per gallon. Assuming I drive that car regularly I'm filling up the tank three times a week. Every time I do so costs me about 40 dollars from empty to full. That's about 120 dollars a month spent in regular gas.
Diesel in this area costs about 4.00 a gallon. This car can get 45-50 miles per gallon. Assuming I drive this car as regularly as my gas car, I'm only filling it up once a month. That's only 50-60 dollars in gas a month.
Yes, diesel costs more, but only by a few cents. We're not talking dollars worth of cents here, only about 30 more at any given time.
When I punch those numbers into a calculator they make a smiley face.
We had a diesel jetta wagon back in 2005, and it burned a lot of smoke out the tail pipe, because the diesel sold in the USA is pure shit compared with the clean stuff in europe. It's the main reason why diesel fuel for passenger cars never caught on over here - dirty rear bumpers and clouds of soot from the rear.
Diesel of similar power engine (torque) versus gas will usually get 20-50% more efficiency in fuel usage per mile. And the engines tend to go longer before overhaul, so there is usually a savings there too. They are noisy, though, compared with gas engines - and more rumbly too.
The statistic for european car ownership - overall for the euro zone - 50% of passenger cars are diesel, and 80% of them are also manual transmission. USA: about 10% manual transmission, and 10% diesel (or less). We're trained NOT to use the sensible cars, so we buy more fuel. Weird, huh?
In fact let me go down the list of things this car's got that Sheela didn't; A working radio. Working AC. Working heat. Butt warmers. A dashboard that actually lights up. All it's tire's lug-nuts. Easy to work on engine. Easy to replace brakes. Easy to change oil.
Really about the only thing this beast don't do that Sheela did is not not asphyxiating it's occupants at stop-lights from the burning oil fumes. Honestly this car is just an improvident.
Also the bug can haul just as nice my old car. Not... that I really do much hauling... Either way I've had him packed with people and noticed no performance issues. It's a turbo diesel so it's got more ummf. Also it's a stick. And I like the rumble. It's almost funny that such a big sound can come out such a small car. It's comforting.
Also Americans are a dumb lot, you know this.
Diesel is closely priced enough to gas for it to not be an issue. And the car is reliable. And it's a stick.
Never got to worry about anyone stealing it. No one knows how to drive a stick anymore.
