Source code modification is allowed within the conditions. I've modified Ubuntu's for fun and planning to build an OS from Gentoo.

I'd like to know how it compares to Traktor. What is it capable of that makes it a recommendation of yours?

more features, easier to use, more skins and add ons, plus the overall layout of virtual dj is better and tractor to me looks like shit

I'm not so concerned about how it looks. That's a bonus in my opinion. I am looking specifically for functionality, but ultimately something that can make syncing tracks easy and work with most controllers well.

VirtualDJ is the best, i use it for Dubstep, DnB, Hardstyle, Dance and Drumstep. it deppends on the music genre you like, plus the effects are way better than Mixx ^^

It depends on what style you are. The three major software are Traktor, Virtual DJ and Serato's Itch.

Serato is for people who are old school vinyl DJs and want to use software with minimal interface and help.
Traktor is more hardcore but gives you a limited scope of your tracks, meaning you still ahve to do things in a more vinyl style, but it has more features, effects, beatmatching etc for you. Most people use Traktor, it is the "defacto" digital DJ standard.
Virtual DJ is a more visual tool with pretty much the same functions as Traktor. I use VDJ.

I'd recommend trying a few demos. Also, keep in mind what hardware controller you eventually want to get. While you can remap any controller to any of those listed software, some of them are pre-compatible with specific software. For example, my Numark Mixtrack Pro works perfectly with Serato and VDJ, but fights with Traktor. The Numark 4Trak comes with Traktor and is 100% compatible out of the box.

I'd suggest playing with all of them to find your groove. You can also switch between softwares at your convenience. You are never locked to just one software.

Very informative, thanks for your point of view. I'm using a demo of VDJ right now and I'll try Traktor to compare. I've seen Recca use Serato over Livestream and it's not something I'd want to use for my own purposes. I've been in the open source world for a bit and noticed that if mixes should be professional, it should be mixed with professional software. Thanks Zen! See you at the furbowl if you're coming.

The programs cater well to one style, and Recca has been a DJ for a long time. Akonite, One Luv, Paws Rewind and Ember are all Traktor users. Myself and Bloodwiser are VDJ users. Gotta base it off of how well you like the software.

All that matters, in the end, is does it sound good, do you like it, and did you have fun?

Yeah, that's the ultimate goal. Traktor seems more suitable from the description you said so I'd give it a try soon.
