Only if I actually think about it (which usually only happens if someone repeats it several times in a short span). I just never grew up around people who used the derogatory form of it (I had no idea it was a slur till I was about 17) and I never see people using it. Hell, I only hear someone say nigger maybe twice a year (I suppose not listening to popular rap music makes a difference).

I too heard 'coon' used to describe raccoons before I heard about it being a slur. It's sort of an outdated slur though. At least, I never hear about it any.

Of all the derogatory racial slurs, "coon" is one I've... never heard outside of stand-up comedy. Is it even used anymore?

ROFL Unlike some black people, I don't care about the word... then again I'm black&WHITE and frequent /b/ a lot so maybe I don't count. That... and I'm very lax about the whole racism bag, it's just comedy to me.

though on a serious note for a moment... I have actually noticed this before myself. personally, I tend to try to make sure to include the ' before the term, since coon as is makes me think of the racial slur much more, whereas 'coon (surely the correct way anyways here) shows that something has been removed for a shorthand.

that said, I've never known anyone in furry use the term and not mean raccoon and therefore I think it's acceptable. Anyone who takes offense at it is clearly out to try to be offended so they can have an argument or for whatever reason (again, within this community I'm refering to mainly here; obviously someone shouts that on the street, it's a whole different ball game. Golf probably).

I don't give power to words. I think more people need to be thick skinned and get over it, too much time is put into people finding ways to become offended. Truth of it, they are all words, you put meaning and power into them. Maybe if people stopped taking such extremes with some of the "offensive" words, the words themselves may just fade away.

Anyway that is just my opinion, of course I could be wrong. As for the word "coon" I think it is one that has lost allot of racial value. Not too many people use it as a racial slur anymore. I have a few raccoon friends and I do call them coon, or coonie, some form of it.
