========================================== So yeah as of last night I finally finished Gates to Infinity. Sorry it took so long, I was busy with school work and stuff. So anyway, I guess it was kinda natural for me to go ahead and give this game a review to see how it stacks up against the other “Mystery Dungeon” games. As well as judge it as a whole. So without further ado lets begin.
Story
The story is probably what I always liked about the “Mystery Dungeon” series because its just so different from the normal formula that Game Freak dishes out. You are a human who gets sent to an alternate dimension where only pokemon exist, and due to a cry of help in your dreams, you get pulled into this world. You become a pokemon and meet up with your future partner (In this game you just choose you don't go through a series of questions to see what you become which was always a gamble with me). From there you work with your partner to build a paradise in the pokemon world. But you soon find out that most of the pokemon in this world are cold and distrusting of one another often looking out for themselves even to the point of hurting others. Soon you go through a series of quests and discover whats going on with this world that has brought you here in the first place.
Now normally I would spoil the ending for the game here but honestly...I cant bring myself to do that...the ending was just so dang good that it made me cry...and thats pretty dang hard to do other than maybe show me a picture of a puppy dying. But like I said the ending is so heartbreaking and bittersweet that I just cant bring myself to spoil it for you guys. You'll just have to see what it is.
Characters
The characters are all very unique and have there own distinct personalities throughout the game There are in fact too many to list but some of my favorite characters were Emolga, Dunsparse (surprisingly enough), and My partner an axew Nicknamed Maxax. There were so many cute quips and funny lines and even heartbreaking moments from all of them that I got really emotionally invested in all the characters. Even the one who we just meet for a few dungeons (if you played the game you know who), that pokemon brought up so many emotions at once that I couldn't put the game down afterward. Making me feel like I had to finish the game right then and there.
Of course there are some bad characters and most of the pokemon said one line or two that really made me wanna smack them. But they redeemed themselves by the end.
Mechanics
The mechanics are pretty much the same like in the other mystery dungeons which is alright I guess but the 3D perspective of the dungeon kinda made the dungeons seem a lot smaller than the were in the other games. I mean, the corridors felt so constricting and there were often too many of them I know mystery dungeon is a dungeon crawler but I spent more time looking at the map on my bottom screen than actually looking at the main screen where all the action was happening.
The music was alright not to many memorable sound tracks except for the "Hope" song that played as well as the ending theme before the credits roll. those were both very nice. Some of the dungeon music was good too but it was often very repetitive and there weren't that many variations in the songs used for different areas other than in the main story.
The moves in the game are a bit different but at the same time have the effect you think they would have. I was a pikachu (naturally) through the entire game and my favorite combo was thunder wave and thunderbolt. cause thunder wave held an enemy in place for 1-2 turns while i used thunderbolt to i everything around me. Thought it is weird to see ground pokemon getting actually hit by my electric attacks but i guess it was just a way to balance out the game (has bad memories of the first game and getting stuck at the 3 birds).
Difficulty
The difficulty in the game isn't all that challenging (but then again I did a bunch of grinding in companion mode to keep the story from progressing and that really boosted my levels overall so the dungeons weren't much of a hassle). The bosses often felt like I was outnumbered even with 4 pokemon which gave the game a bit of challenge. especially when I was up against 6 Excadrills, I was making sure everyone was properly healed and i would occasionally thunderbolt the heck out of them but mainly my team was the one that shined there.
The final boss is rather interesting and if you dot have a lot of oran berries and reviver seeds your gonna die and die hard. Mainly because he takes almost half your health with each attack which is a real problem especially cause you can’t damage it in the first stage but you gotta keep wailing on it anyway.
But its not much different from the other mystery dungeon games in terms of difficulty. difficult enough for a child but still engaging for an adult. Well that is if you are a fan of the mystery dungeon series.
Conclusion
Overall I enjoyed this game as i said so early on. Its not the best mystery dungeon game but its close to it. (My personal fave is still Explorers of Darkness) I would recommend it if only for the fantastic story. I haven't played much past the credits so I don't know if there is anything beyond the little thing at the end with your partner. So let me know if there is. I always appreciate what you guys think. Thank you very much
Oh, and if you haven't already check it out yet. Check out the latest video from me and my buddies over on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nja3jVi9iG0

Though I was slightly sad at the lower choice pool this time when it came to main character pokemon, everyone before this had such a wide choice of starters and those few special choices *high-fives because he did every mystery dungeon as pikachu* Still it was a great game, I'm still wondering how they will follow it up as they always seem to have one lined up with an even better story.
as for the character selection. this one was to mainly show off the Black and white starters. Just like the fist one showed of kanto and jhoto and hoenn and the next one shoed off diamond and platnium this one is showing off the 5th gen
Like they took out the "belly" meter, so now you dont have to take food items with you into dungeons, but the one thing that I dont like about the game is that they pretty much left out a majority of the past gen pokemon, leaving the whole 5th gens in there, but only putting in 35 past gen pokemon. Which is a real let down :/
