Animations of the Week -- Remembering Ray Harryhausen
12 years ago
General
As probably most of you already know, stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen died this week.
I saw The Golden Voyage of Sinbad in a movie theater when I was 9 years old. The following sequence left a big impression on me. (Guess which combatant I was cheering for?):
On a lighter note, the following is a rarely-seen version of The Tortoise and the Hare that was also animated by Harryhausen. The audio does not play all the way through this copy, but what you can hear features the voice of Gary Owens -- who, coincidentally, is celebrating his 77th birthday today!

A fitting tribute to the master of effects.

The centaur/gryphon fight is a classic Harryhausen sequence, and I was always cheering for the gryhon as a kid. That said, I prefer the cyclops/dragon battle from 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad', mainly because I think both monsters are wonderfully designed. Actually, '7th Voyage' is possibly my favorite Harryhausen movie overall. 'Valley of Gwangi' comes a close second, then probably 'Mysterious Island'.

The Harryhausen films were always considered to be the cream of the crop when I was a kid, whether the movie was sci-fi or fantasy. My personal favorite was Earth vs The Flying Saucers because of some of the creepier elements of the story (selected citizens being turned into zombie-like robotic slaves of the invaders) and for the iconic scenes of the battle between the US Army and the saucers -- including that shot of the giant saucer crashing into the Capitol building in DC.
