Look at any furry couple and I'll think you'll have your answer.
The one they love is definitely not the fursona, but the person behind.
Expecting couples love each other due to fursonas is the same as thinking someone loves someone just for the job/status/car or something else.

As for the art, gifts for loved once.
Sometimes it's chocolate&flowers, sometimes it's an romantic dinner, sometimes it's a surprise gift, and sometimes it's a romantic picture.

It's of course naturally to assume a couple only love their fursonas if you only see their interaction through recording and art of their fursonas.
However meet them IRL and you'll get a more complete picture :)
