The Oakutarui Disaster was a milestone in the First Intergalactic War, and it was the one of the major events that ever happened throughout the war. It took place in 2785.
REPUBLIC FACT: The name "Redemption" was thought of by Republic General Mydou to hope "Redeem" the galaxy from the Oltanians
Just 2 years before the Climax of the war, when the Republic was building its Super-Star Destroyer, when the Oltanian Armada appeared over the planet Oakutarui, the Shipyards of the Lower Republic and the location of the Super Star Destroyer. Aiming to capture the SSD, the Oltanian Armada attacked the partially defended the shipyards. Immediately responding the Republic dispersed the 5th Regiment from Oakutarui III to help defend the SSD. While distracting the the Armada, one brave captain decided to activate the SSD nicknamed REDEMPTION to help pull the tide of the battle in favor of the Republic. However the Captain didn't realize that when he fired one of the turbolaser turrets of the Redemption instead of hitting the Oltanian Armada, the shot hit the Oakutarui's surface.
What happened next will later impact the war and galaxy. What happened was a purplish gas began to erupt from the impact zone. This gas very expansive when exposed to Oxygen began to expand at a very rapid rate. Very quickly the gas enveloped the planet's surface, but what looked like it was covering the planet from space, was actually killing it. On the surface, the gas quickly killed all plant and animal life even people aswell.
In just a span of 22.1 minutes, the purplish gas enveloped the planet no sign of life throughout the surface, this shocking event not only gave the Republic the advantage to finish the Oltanians and clear them from the Lower Republic from them, but also sparked massive uproar in the Galaxy, and the War was put aside for a year to mourn the loss for those on Oakutarui.
=== Media attacks the Republic ===
The Public Holonets soon blarred the cause of the loss of life on Oakutarui. Due to the quick process of the event, no "actual media" was recorded but the Republic Cruiser "Zander's Strength" was approaching the planet from the dusk side when it recorded the tragedy. It showed that the Redemption actually fired the shot into the planet's surface that caused the whole event. When this recording was leaked into the Public Holonet, the media attacked the Republic blaming them for the loss of life on Oakutarui. The Chancellor at the time, Chancellor Granger and Queen Joyce attempted to soothe the Media's hate, but with the Media in an uproar, they had nothing else to do but try to negate it. The Republic Senate went into recess for 4 days to allow the Media to leave them alone.
For almost 16 months the Public Holonet kept bombarding the Republic Military and Government for what happened at Oakutarui, but the Executive's branch's only response was that "The Disaster that befell on Oakutarui was a tragedy and we mourn the loss of those on the planet" Despite the harsh bombarding of the media, the Republic manage to push through and win the First Intergalactic War.
