It looks informative, but I'm not sure how useful it'll actually be: it was one of the top results for "if statement in math", so I ran with it (I just wanted to make a statement about how intimidating math equations can be when you don't understand the symbols and syntax). If it helps, great!

Math is actually pretty fun when you have a good teacher. It's a shame there's so few good teachers.

All I could think about after reading that was bubbles, zits, and glitter ... Ew.

So, it helps to work through problems like these by picking it into parts.

"All zoots are bubbles" gives us essentially two data points: 1) If something is a zoot, it is necessarily a bubble. 2) If something is a bubble, it may or may not be a zoot.


"Zoots are red or blue" gives us: Something which is red might be a zoot, something which is blue might be a zoot, and something which is not red or blue is definitely not a zoot.

"If a zoot is blue, it is a zat." gives us: All blue zoots are necessarily zats. Since a zoot is a zat, it is also necessarily a bubble.

"If bubbles have glitter, it is a zit." gives us: a bubble, regardless of if it's a zoot or not, regardless of what colour it is, and regardless of if it's a zat or not, which has glitter, is (also) a zit.


Now we look at the possible answers:

"A zat is a blue zit without glitter." A zit by definition has glitter, and therefore "zit without glitter" does not refer to any objects as we've defined them. Also, the presence/absence of glitter was not a prerequisite for being a zat, and so this also does not match the definition for zat.

"A red zoot with glitter is a zit but not a zat." A red zoot with glitter is a valid combination given the presented rules. A zoot is a bubble, and if a bubble has glitter it's a zit, and therefore the classification of "a red zoot with glitter is a zit" is correct. Furthermore, a zat by definition must be blue, so the "but not a zat" is also correct since this zoot is red. This is a sound conclusion.

"A blue bubble with glitter is a zit but not a zat." A bubble with glitter is a zit, so the first part holds. A bubble may or may not be a zoot, and if it is, then being blue means that it must be a zat, which conflicts with the second part.

"If a bubble is red and has glitter, it is a zit and a zat." Again a bubble with glitter is a zit, but we have not been given any rules which state if a red bubble can be a zat, so it is not a sound conclusion to derive from the rules we've been given.

The worst thing you can do when you see complicated things like this is to panic. When you panic, your body releases 'fight or flight' hormones which inhibit your ability to think. Breath deeply, relax, and take it one step at a time.

For example, rather then get confused over what does a 'zoot' mean, or what is a bubble, or anything... just start writing down facts as you know them to make things clearer. For example, from the starting information given to you...


All zoots are bubbles.
1) Zoots = Bubbles. This means whenever you see Zoot you can just replace it with bubbles.

Zoots are red or blue.
2) Zoot = Bubbles, therefor all bubbles are either red or blue.

And so on and so on. Just break down the information one piece at a time and you'll figure it out in no time! =^.^=
