Wish I got that kind of mileage. I'm lucky if I get 18MPG on cruise on the highway.

pickup is a 4 cylinder with 5 speed + cruise
So that may of helped plus I did use the A/C in it on the way home too

That's awesome fuel economy for a pickup truck.
My 1999 Silverado (4.8L V-8) gets 22 mpg on the highway. The K&N Filtercharger gave me a 2 mpg boost when I installed it 10 years ago..
Oh, 158,000 miles on it, too..

I just calculated 39.4 MPG on a recent drive. Of course, that's on a 1999 Saturn SL1, five-speed manual. It has cruise control, but I don't even know how to use it, and I don't really see any point to it. Daily use seems to achieve about 34 MPG, which is also nice.

It also perhaps helps that I never drive on the Interstate, or above 55mph. Efficiency and safety, yay!

Why not? It's quite simple; just make the needle point to the number. I've never been able to understand why that's so difficult for some people; I've come to the conclusion that such people are either incapable of operating a motor vehicle or are mentally defective in some way...although I must admit that I've attributed most bad driving to people compensating for tiny penises.

As I stated, the time savings is quite minuscule, especially when compared to the greatly-increased fuel consumption. It's simply not worth it, from any rational basis. Unfortunately, people persist in doing irrational, self-destructive things all the time, from smoking to voting Republican. It's quite depressing, whenever I think about it.

Yes, that might've helped also. A good amount of that is simply not driving like an idjit. Follow the speed limits, don't accelerate too fast, don't race to get to the next stoplight, and coast downhill whenever possible.

That certainly helps, yes. It also helps my brakes to last longer. I've had this car for five years and the only brake work I've needed is when the right rear cylinder developed a leak. Same pads, rotors, and drums from when I bought it, with no observable difference in performance.

Both of which are faster than any reasonable person should operate an automobile. In the unlikely even that I ever encounter such a speed limit, it shall be ignored and a safer and more efficient speed selected. After all, those signs only specify an upper limit (one that nobody follows, much to my annoyance) rather than a lower one.

Yes, now if only we could have another oil embargo, we'd be much better off; efficiency standards would actually improve, speed limits would drop to more reasonable levels, and could be more broadly enforced with technology we didn't really have in the '70s.

And they set such speed limits because the people who set them are clearly idiots. I can think of no other explanation aside from mental illness or defect.
