Advice on equipment you'd recommend for respraying a car. I wanna give it a shot, and i can't possibly make the paint (or lack thereof) any worse!

I have already had someone recommend to me a belt-driven compressor and a high quality gravity fed gun. I'm wondering if they can be hired or borrowed...or if 2nd hand ones are available.

I plan on taking great care, doing alot of prep work and setting up a paint booth out of clear plastic sheet or something, and having good lighting, one of those condom suits and mask.

It's just something I wanna have a go at doing. Seen it done in so many videos and tutorials and I know it wont be as good as a pro job....but at least i can say I had a go!

The best thing to help make it look its best is ALL the prep work underneath. be sure all dents are out/filled. be sure the primer is super smooth, no scratch marks whats so ever. And that it's all been cleaned in a very clean area that absolutely no dust can get in. It's also best to make sure the temperature is at LEAST 23 degrees .. way better to do it when its around 27 or up. The cold has dramatic effect on how it turns out. (thus why hiring a heated booth is probly better if you plan to do it during winter) booths are good to get dust away and have extraction fans aswell. plus when you're done. it can be set to 'bake' for a few hours.. wayyy faster than waiting a few days! ^_^
I only painted small things at home with home made booth.. but for the car we hired a booth... anyone who hires them out can also probly loan you a gun to use too. and they have air lines already in them. If you're lucky they might even be able to give you tips on using the gun.
Learning to use a gun takes time too. It's not as easy as a spray can. you can't just pick up and go. It takes practice to know what it's doing and how much pressure you need for certain areas and how to layer it. every paint is different.
Alot of people hate using 2pack paint because imperfections are seen easily (but I like using it..it can be buffed smooth!) 2 pack is if the colour is a plain colour.. no metallics. Base coat is easy to apply (this is what metallics come in... but if it's not sprayed right you will see the lines you did when it's finished.. thus why someone showing you would be better) All base coats need a few coats and a clear coat.. clear is hard to use, like 2 pack paint. it has high tendency to run and ruin the look..(it can also be buffed, but if you do it too much you can cut too much clear away and get the base coat) Also.. all paint with metallics or pearl are VERY expensive, eg.. 250ml of a green metallic I bought cost me $82.. for a whole car you need about 3-4 litres. PLUS that much for the clear aswell. 2 pack is much less and you dont need a clear. ^_^

A spray gun doesnt have to be expensive to paint well. the ones at super cheap are perfectly fine, i've used them before. It's only good to get an expensive one if you plan to use it ALL the time. (also DONT use the same spray gun for primer and colour!)
The air compressor should have a large capacity to be able to handle continuous air flow, without over heating. And must have CLEAN lines... alot have oil in them.
The clear sheet you should get is for spraying. it's special anti static plastic to prevent over spray going back onto the car.
Very important too to spend a couple hours masking up the whole car properly... you can really tell when someone doesnt do it right! =P And make sure the mask you wear has the GAS filter in it.. not just particle, thats only for dust.. gas filters out the paint fumes!

I can understand too awards ceremonies can be like that... but food and drinks... well worth the wait :3
