Character descriptions
Below are more detailed and individual descriptions for most of that characters that I’m intending to feature when I resume work on my webcomic. There’s some details though that I want to withhold for revealing in the comic itself.
When I first envisaged my webcomic taking form I had intended for them to appear as if they’d come together from entirely different worlds, with different art styles, much like the premise of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” As I’m nearly 44 now and have still yet to learn how to draw well it’s unlikely that I’ll ever achieve that, but I’ll indicate below which publisher / animation studio was to be the style for each.
The setting for my characters is in Australia during the 2040’s (originally the 2050’s but I changed my mind) at which point social and economic problems are rife in this country.
Sorry this took so long: took a lot of time and concentration to write.
Sebastian Sauerpüss
Species: Wallaby / Chameleon hybrid
Height: Roughly 115cm or nearly 4 foot
Intended art style: Very corny and cheap old cartoons
Details planned to be revealed in the webcomic: Sebastian’s biological mother, and what happens with his relationship with Rachel.
Found abandoned as a joey on the doorstep of social worker Noree Calga the unusual hybrid attracted the attention of renown German zoological geneticist Ziegfried Sauerpüss. Gradually falling in love and unable to ever find Sebastian’s parents they married and adopted him as their own.
Sebastian’s half-chameleon body permits him to alter the colour of his fur, though he’s slower than a full-blooded chameleon and the change takes a few seconds to complete. He is only able to blend in with his surroundings if he remains motionless and closes his eyes, as his eyelids change colour but his eyes don’t.
From childhood into adulthood Sebastian has always reckless, hyperactive and self-centred and an attention seeker. Very insensitive he often doesn’t realise that his antics irritate some people, though his brother’s short –temper is a quick reminder. Sebastian lives as though there’s no tomorrow, and likes to believe he’s popular with everyone. Sadly, he is indeed fairly popular with crowds. Sebastian took an easy route through life and is employed as a male stripper for a burlesque house simply known as “Possums” where the waitresses are possums and other small marsupial & monotreme girls dressed to look like Playboy bunnies. Not only does Sebastian’s fluorescent fur make him a hit with the audience, so too does his singing voice and stand-up comedy routines, along with his flawless voice impersonations. After only a few years in the job Sebastian became a millionaire several times over, but that’s not the only perk of his job; he’s a ladies man and has no complaints about being surrounded by dozens of half-dressed feminine beauties. Often he uses his special fur to camouflage against the walls of the ladies dressing rooms.
Sebastian is a character I thought up in the early 1990’s when I was experimenting with POVRAY and applied a rainbow skin to a wallaby character I was working on.
Michael Sauerpüss
Species: Red fox / eastern grey kangaroo hybrid
Height: 183cm or almost exactly 6 foot
Intended art style: Newspaper comics such as Footrot Flats
Details planned to be revealed in the webcomic: He is reunited with a relative who he was told had died.
The main character of my (currently on hiatus) webcomic.
Born a few months after the Sauerpüss couple married (kangaroos have short pregnancies) and just under a year after Sebastian hatched Michael is the firstborn of Ziegfried and Noree. As a young joey Michael was full of enthusiasm and curiosity, but this faded into a bitter, world-weary disposition. It wasn’t helped that he was orphaned at the age of 17, at which point he had to assume the responsibilities of head of the family, honoring a promise to his dying mother that Michael would take care of his immature older brother Sebastian, and his younger sister Hilda. Michael put himself and Hilda through college and steadily worked his way up the hierarchy of “Maxpress” the road haulage company. Not long after becoming an executive for the firm Michael ran afoul of the Managing Director’s unscrupulous liar of a son Lenny Johnson who framed Michael for attempting to view confidential information. With the help of Michael’s friend Patrick they found E-mail evidence proving Michael’s innocence, but the E-mail message was transferred into a virtual reality game and lost among the objects in the game. Since then Michael has regularly played the game, searching for the E-mail, while also improving his athletic and martial arts skills in the process. He also finds the game a good escape from the miserable, underpaid role he was demoted to at the office.
Michael lives in one of the upper apartments of a residential tower block, only a few lots up the street from where Patrick has his garage-home. Each day Michael has to travel from his home in the fictional outer-Newcastle suburb of Swansea Heights to the Sydney CBD where he works. In addition to his physical skills Michael speaks not only English but fluent German (learned from his father) and Mandarin (taught in school). He also has some proficiency in certain computer programming languages.
Michael comes across as a sullen, indifferent individual who never laughs and rarely smiles, but he has a heart of gold for his family and friends. He is usually pessimistic and easily depressed, yet can be relied upon when the going gets tough. He also has a strong sense of moral obligation and a deep loathing for unscrupulous people such as Lenny. He would prefer his life to be simpler and not to become entwined in adventures, but circumstance and fate often dictate otherwise.
Michael and Patrick are the two characters who I have worked on the longest. They were also both originally villains but I grew to like them so much that eventually I changed their karma while still keeping their personalities much the same. Michael started out as a kangaroo, but I always felt this was lacking until I hit on the idea of him being a fox/kangaroo crossbreed which suited his personality well. I thought I’d come up with something very original, and then later discovered how common hybrids are in the furry community. Oh well…
Patrick Digby
Species: Hog
Height: 175cm, about 5 foot 7
Intended art style: Chuck Jones style cartoons (Warner Brothers animation studios)
Patrick is a car mechanic who works freelance out of a garage that he also lives in, which resembles a barn or stable in some ways. Idealistic, optimistic and ever over-zealous he is perpetually building overpowered and oversized contraptions at a whim. As an example on one hot summer day he decided to start brewing ginger beer, but shunned the old plastic bucket & wooden spoon method in favor of constructing a small ginger beer refining machine in his back yard. The explosion rattled the windows of Michael’s apartment but nonetheless Patrick had already produced two dozen bottles of brew and was then seen relaxing with a frothy mug of ice cold ginger pop. Patrick is also continually improving the performance of his cars (over the life of the comic I plan for him to have several), fitting more powerful motors and sophisticated on-board computers. Patrick follows the Wille. E. Coyote philosophy; nothing is too outlandish, and if it doesn’t work then just try a different approach. Patrick is usually very cheerful and full of confidence, and usually shrugs off failed endeavors, though you don’t want to be around if repeated frustrations cause his temper to blow. In those situations he’s likely to grab a heavy object from his tool rack and beat inanimate objects into submission.
Patrick’s family lived in Australia for five generations but his parents briefly moved to the USA for about ten years before returning. Patrick was born there and thus holds dual citizenship, along with a slight accent (I haven’t decided from which state) and a fondness for American television.
Patrick is the love interest of Kim Tsu, a small furry dragon. He is very fond of her, and wants to do what is in her best interests but he’s no romantic and often has to seek advice on how to make a relationship work.
Whereas I wanted Michael to be an especially detailed character for appealing to readers who prefer that, Patrick is diametrically opposite; I sought to keep him as simple as possible.
Along with Michael, Patrick is one of my longest developed characters, and was also a villain when I first cast him. My brother also assisted in the early stages of developing the character.
A running gag that I used in my older stories was that pollution would be so severe in the future it contaminates tobacco plants causing them to often mutate into an explosive mix. Patrick likes to smoke cigars, however this bad habit is nearly self-curing because the stogies tended to self-destruct in mild explosions and a lot of smoke. The humour was in Patrick’s perseverance with the cheaper brands of cigar that were more prone to this. I’m not certain if I’ll use this in my webcomic as it seems somewhat childish these days.
Hilda Sauerpüss
Species: Red fox / eastern grey kangaroo hybrid
Height: 178cm, just under 6 foot
Intended art style: Mixture of newspaper cartoons and anime
Details planned to be revealed in the webcomic: She has a crippling birth defect
Hilda was the 2nd and last child of the Sauerpüss couple, both of whom died before Hilda turned sixteen. Hilda inherited her fox father’s red fur, making her the first female kangaroo to have a red coat (even female red kangaroos aren’t coloured red, as the females have a soft bluish grey fur). In order to ensure that Hilda could attend college her brother Michael took a part-time job as a data entry operator that he could perform after his own classes. That and the trust fund set up by their father helped the family get by.
Hilda has the most quiet and studious nature of the three Sauerpüss children, but the adorable face behind her glasses hides a strong, defiant no-nonsense disposition that she inherited from her mother. She chose to major in virology and hopes to further her father’s work in curbing diseases that cross the species boundary. She currently lives on-campus in a dormitory room which she has decorated with native Australian woodcarvings.
Kim Tsu
Species: Small furry dragon
Intended art style: Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli
Details planned to be revealed in the webcomic: A mysterious ability to know things about people when there’s no logical reason she should.
The girlfriend of Patrick, Kim is a small furry Chinese dragon with silvery-white fur. She is smaller even than Sebastian. Kim is especially reserved and quiet and usually only speaks up when there is something important she has to say. She’s worth listening to when she does, by having an uncanny insight into things seemingly beyond her possible range of knowledge.
Kim is very timid and in some ways looks to Patrick as an emotional shield, though she seems to find answers to problems when nobody else can. She lives in a small cottage in the suburb of Toronto on the shore of Lake Macquarie (yes it’s a real place, look it up).
This character is a more recent addition to my cast, when someone rightly pointed out that I need more women folk in the cast.
Rachel “Misty” Hayes
Species: Spotted hyena
Intended art style: Simple anime
Details planned to be revealed in the webcomic: What happens with her relationship with Sebastian
Rachel, more often known as “Misty” among her many online aliases is a hot-headed hyena girl 18 years old living in West Virginia, studying to be an airline hostess and working part time as a milkmaid in a high-tech dairy. Accustomed to getting up early in the morning she meets Michael and Patrick online in the virtual reality game during what is late evening on the Australian east coast. After initially trying to kill them she then invites herself along on their quests in the game, much to Michael’s frustration as he finds her annoying in every way immaginable. She is not a team player, preferring to charge into trouble without looking, refusing advice and instructions, and losing her temper easily when criticised. She also tries to dictate how Michael should play, in disregard for his years of experience with the game and her having barely started playing.
When next Michael meets Rachel it’s in person a few years later. She is now a junior hostess on an American airline company and her most recent flight has taken her to Sydney. She reveals that on the conclusion of their game session she looked up his details in order to visit him, in the process learning of Michael’s adopted brother Sebastian and where he works. Michael meanwhile reveals that he was alerted to Rachel’s intrusions into his social networking pages, consequently finding her own pages, and talks disdainfully to her of the numerous stories of her sexual escapades. Unashamed, Rachel sets eyes on Sebastian as a quick and easy way to gain a more glamorous and better-paying job as a stripper herself. Sebastian is very keen to have a new performer at the burlesque house, and only too happy for the attractive young woman to move in with him while he coaches her on stage performance. Initially they merely use one another for mutual benefit, never expecting that they would eventually develop true feelings for each other. However karma comes back on them in ways they don’t expect.
Rachel is probably the most recently created character in my cast, but I’m expecting her to be a lot of fun to work with in the comic.
GG1
Species: Robotic iron horse who later becomes a mostly flesh & blood cyborg
Intended art style: Undecided
For her description go here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10547932/
Lenny Johnson:
Species: Sheep
Art style: Undecided
Lenny is an especially geeky sheep working in the same office as Michael. He is the son of the Managing Director and never hesitates for an instance to take unfair advantage of any situation. He framed Michael by making it appear that Michael had accessed confidential information on his computer.
Rarely seen without his trademark creepy smile, Lenny is a confidence trickster and a highly adept liar who has a talent for making people believe what he wants them to. Rarely does he engage in verbal conflicts himself, but instead orchestrates conflicts between other people through by way of spreading rumors. He has no conscience whatsoever and sees other people only as means to his ends.
Inspiration for this character came from two sources, primarily someone I knew in college who six years later I discovered was a walking lie factory, and the other source was a sadistic former boss of mine whose people skills were lacking.
Natalia (surname TBA)
Species: Equine
Intended art style: Disney
Natalia is a boisterous equine character who works as an advertising executive for an airline company that competes with Michael’s company for freight haulage. This would be of no concern for Michael except that Natalia is wildly infatuated with him, posessing a delusional impression that he feels the same for her but is playing hard to get. He isn’t. Michael avoids her whenever he can, but she often schemes to coral Michael into sharing social events with her.
This character I haven’t even started to draw, and yet she’s been the source of numerous problems because of co-incidences in the real world.
Firstly her surname and exact species are a very near match for the fursona of someone else I knew. This is why I’ll need to withold her surname until an appropriate point in the comic.
Secondly the dysfunctional attraction Natalia feels for Michael is very similar to what already took place between Lisa Dodson and Mikey Hopkins of The Class Menagerie Webcomic (http://www.theclassm.com/chars/index.html) Gah! It doesn’t help that my foxaroo is named Michael.
Thirdly, an especially neurotic work colleague named Natalie who I once had the misfortune of working with heard about the character and claimed that it was based on her. Thankfully I had material on the characters dated from several years prior, which made it easy to prove her wrong.
Lastly, and this is getting ridiculous, my idiot brother chose the name Natalia for his firstborn. So now I have a niece with the same name as one of my characters.
That’s the main cast, bar a few incidental characters. I’m very eager to resurrect the comic, but I need to learn drawing, Blender3D and GIMP before I can do so. My first attempt was enjoyable to produce, but my efforts were frustrating because I really didn’t know what I was doing, and the results were depressing. On that occasion I had been bullied into a premature launch of the webcomic. When next I make an attempt only I will decide and not someone else.

I think Kim Tsu is my favorite(Eastern dragons! ), and I hate to say it but I particularly paid more attention to the characters with "Disney" or "Anime" in the intended art styles!
