The balloons were speaking to him!
At the beginning of my shift one of the people who works up front brought some balloons back. Apparently, some kid started having a fit and ripped them off of their strings (We have some mylar/foil ones inflated already as sort of a grab and go thing) and in his efforts to get out of the store had been stopped by a legal guardian of some sort who then had to chase after him as he tore out of the store and apparently across the street as he screamed his head off.
A few hours later the kid came back sans mother. He lives a mile or two away. He is twelve. He had no shoes, no shirt and a mission. He jumped up on the newsstand and ripped the balloons down tearing them free from their weights and proceeded to jump between registers attempting to liberate each and every balloon he could. Some of them floated to the ceiling some of them he brought outside and let go. Still, he ran as various managerial types tried to stop him. Eventually he was cornered calmed to... a point.
From what I've gathered the balloons had told him to free them. He didn't know who his parents were or anything else, other than his mission. Eventually the cops came by to try to keep things in order and get hold of his mom somehow which they did.
Just another day at work.
