Comic book artists tend to be higher because they're not just "online artists". They're very busy people and have to price more according to demand. I believe he's still cheaper at conventions $40 for the first char $20 for every extra char? I'm sure someone will correct me if it's changed.

$100 vs $500+ (room+Travel) is no contest for many.

I can understand they're busy and whatnot, but I'm a little more used to the price going that high if the person asking the commission goes crazy with the details, background, coloring and whatnot, raising the amount of work the artist has to do to finish the piece to the customer in question.

Tit for tat pricing as the image progresses always seemed stupid to me when it came to normal buyers as opposed to studio work. Time wasting. Up front advertising seems to work the best anyway.

I've seen higher, especially outside a convention. Supply and Demand, ya know? XD

Say what you will, but that's still a lot of money for a black and white picture of a single character. And it's a lot of money when you don't have a disposable income either. I'm not the only person who's of the same opinion, as I'm sure you're not the only one of yours, but any way you slice it $100 can buy a lot of food.

I'll just point out its for two chars(or one plus a shitload of background detail) and leave it at that.

I got a commission of two characters with color for $13, and I defy you to tell me the artist is less worthy. =/

You're well entitled to your opinion and taste, so that's cool. There's alot of artists I wouldn't pay $5 for a picture from, but theres some I will and have paid over $100 for a single picture from.

Same here, as much as I adore fred...that's a bit much for a single black and white pen pic of one character. Adam Warren is just as popular and last I checked his commissions weren't that high.

But hey, Fred doe have to make a living and comics really don't pay as well as you'd think.

I was corrected one one point. It's for up to two characters, or one character with a background. But yes, the point still remains. I've been a fan of his work for years, but I just couldn't pay that much for a drawing.

The arguments against my position are stacking. This is weird... a discussion on the internet that makes sense... and it's on a furry website. ._. I'm kinda scared.

But I did not see any of the work he'd done for the commissions already. I'll have to give it a look. But, just like you, I've got reasons why I can't afford it. Mainly that I'm a college student, and any money I use needs to be paid back after I graduate.

I think the primary reason for my initial reaction was that I was peeved I couldn't get a Perry commission after wanting one for so long.

And I'm not gonna judge you for that. xD Not at all.

Actually, Adam's pics are pretty equal in price when you consider it's $40 for a pencil sketch of 2 original characters that you can only sign up for at a convention and takes 8-12 months for delivery. Fred's offering a 2 character inked picture for $100 that you don't have to go to a convention for and will be delivered in 4-6 weeks, though some have been completed in 1-2 days. ;D

The last 5 pics I commissioned from Adam Warren actually took 2 years for delivery, btw. (:-

Heh, just think how saddened I was to find out that a sketch from Larry Elmore would cost $500 when I first had a chance to get something from him. XD

I meet him once at Akon 06, I think he would recognize me a bit, first impression, he called me a bear --;;;;
and when I took a pic, I blinded the entire crowd for a second when someone nudged me before I could turn off the flash

Since it's a base $100 for 1 or 2 characters, I think alot of folks are going halfsies. You and a buddy each chip in $50 and you get both your characters drawn. Of course, then you get to fight over who gets the actual artwork when it comes in the mail. ;D

I don't have a lot of friends so I can't go that route.
