You can go from Toronto, Quebec, or Vancouver to Pittsburg on Amtrak if you have a friend or drive yourself down there.

I've gone to a con before only able to afford admission and the stay in the hotel, and it was still worth it to go. It's the experience, getting to know other furs, not having enough Spending Money is not a reason you should stay back, if you get admission, I'm sure there would be plenty of people who would be willing to help you out.

There's not much I can say other than that you'd love it if you went. I went in '07 and '08, and am probably going to go in '09 as well. It's tons of fun...there's so much to see and do, and so many friends to meet in person and many new friends to make. ^^

You can most likely hitch a ride with some other CA furres that are driving to Pittsburgh if you loan them a little gas money. All in all money isn't a big issue...figure 150 USD for room, another 50 for food, 50 for fuel and you're set! ^^

I felt the same way my first time too, and I was in the exact same situation (canada, alone, 18, and with little money). Its really worth it, ya you might have to pay it off slowly over time, but it will be worth it. Try and stay with some friends or something cuts down on room costs.

If your a full time student then you can buy a cheap flight to Pittsburgh from Travel Cuts with a student discount. If not Amtrak is a good option but know that if you go the full way to new york on the canadian line then you'll have to wait in NY overnight till you can get a train to Pittsburgh.

The only little warning I have is that if your gonna fly, do book as early as you can, the pittsburgh flights book up fast through toronto.

AC's a long way off now. Which is good 'cuz it gives planning room. If you're lookin to cut your price you should consider rooming with other people who're goin. Me depending on how things go in the next few months me and a few friends should get a room together and split the price. And you're more than welcome to join in, if that'll help ^^

Kien; you can likely room with any number of people, who are liable to be able to give you a drive.

Yes, people will expect you to pay cash but you should be able to easily survive on 500$ for the whole con, maybe 1000$ if you go ABSONUTS! with art and stuff though I recommend reserves of 700$ which will get you a decent share in a room and nice food.

As for crossing the border have your passport and travel information ready and be aware of ANY and ALL criminal and civil... issues in your family and be ready to account for them.

Dont 'be scared, really!

Furries are very open minded, and IRL people are nice and like all
of them know to behave (whereas on the nets everyone is pretty damn straight / bold /scary) , you get introduced REALLY easily.

Try to find forums or people on IRC, get acquainted with'em and all ^^
On the spot you'll find plenty people drawing, so just join, or go drink with some others =)

Anyway, making friends is a nice way to save money as well, i know many furs who are eager to provide a place to stay / sleep to some others, even if they don't know each other a lot , because everyone is aware that money isn't easy to get ^^

The more reliable friends you have, the more your parents, and yourself, will feel at ease.

Seriously, don't miss the cons, imho it's really the best part of the furry, it totally changed me when i got there, meating awesome, famous people and just cool ones, to party.

i haven't been to anthrocon and doubt ill ever go, but im also 18 and went to the states from canada with just a friend and it worked out fine. im also sort of shy but you know, once you do it you realize its easy and fun.
