The hardest part for me being a graphic designer was finding work, so I decided to freelance it. I'm both a graphic designer and a radio broadcaster, so I've got a bit more of a broad spectrum to be able to tap into.

How did you start freelancing?

I just got up the gumption and started doing work for student clubs at the college. Then, I did the layout and editing for a campus newspaper, and when the editor-in-chief got wind of my graphic design skills. I started doing ads, then the one company who saw what I was able to do asked me to do more for buses and stuff. So, I got a fair amount of money for that. It escalated from there.

It can be difficult getting your foot in the door with graphic design with all the competition around, but persistence pays off. Ask your friends and family to keep an eye out for openings, do online job searches, and send your resume to places that you think you'd like to work, even if they don't seem to be hiring (you may be surprised with a phone call or e-mail). An internship is very helpful too. Are you a student member of AIGA? They can be quite helpful.

Temp agencies are okay but the work is never guaranteed, and freelance can be difficult as a fresh designer but not impossible (I kept my freelancing local until I got my current permanent job). Whatever happens, keep creating portfolio work even if you don't find a job right away; employers like to see what you've done outside of school as well.
