Well for Secondlife advice..

My biggest peice of advice is to get a premade avatar, even if you want to make one. You can learn from it and you can go from there, and it is alot better than wandering in a default human form. Besides that, it's important to keep yer priorities, alot of people come onto SL and get focused on the more um.. *ahem* social aspects and never really work out a good image for themselves, which leads to frustration pretty fast.

Besides that, if you need any help I wouldn't mind giving ya a pointer or two ingame, if you come.

Dear heart, I recommend Second Life (most for the fact I know full well you can make your character there, and the fact I would love to meet you). If you do join, once you learn to use the Map and to Teleport (easy, quick stuff to pick up), come to the sim NorthStar, and there you will find many who will aid you in making Stelard perfectly.
