Not sure why you even replied to this is you didn't want to start a fight. Seriously, I'm just happy I have Linux on my machine; I don't like to worry, therefore, Linux is a good choice for me. Not trying to change anyone's opinion here, just making a statement.

Yes Linux is good! I personally don't run it full time but it helps to have it set up on a USB stick ready for booting! It makes me feel more safe when I'm on Linux, plus it looks nicer than Windows (some distros anyway).

Linux (Or at least Ubuntu) is simple to pick up (Took me a grand total of five minutes, tops. Except for remembering where the clock was on it. That took a couple days.). And it uses LibreOffice as its default suite of office software, which is nice, because it doesn't have that horrendous mess that the UI for Microsoft Office software has become. :P

But, really, each to their own.

I love Linux (the simple version anyone can use, I'm no programmer XD), but its compatibility issues with most of the programs I use (I play some obscure Japanese games that require massive hoop jumping to get to run, so its not like I've got open source options like with Word and the like.) just makes it too much of a hassle. Dual running OSes is a storage space eating mess and rather inconvenient on its own in my experience, so I just suck it up and use my copy of Windows 7. I am never getting 8 though. XD

Agree with you one Microsoft Office though. I use OpenOffice for a reason. XDD

Ubuntu has a Wine wrapper that works pretty well and is REALLY easy to use - to the point that you just double-click the .exe to install it and it shows up on your apps menu, just like in Windows.

Just install 'wine' through the software center and you're all set. :)

I actually tried Wine for this. Part of the problem is I don't read Japanese and so I have to use a machine translator program (which is... I am grateful for the voice acting because machine translations are problematic at best XD) that hooks in via shortcuts and the like and they don't work due to how the file system works on Linux. I can run it, but I can't hook everything together right to get it to all work together. It's AGTH and Visual Novels if you're interested in researching it.

Oh, it doesn't surprise me that stuff like that doesn't work. Time to learn Japanese, I guess.

There are those (like me) who choose to use LINUX because they want an OS that they can actually study the workings of. Microsoft will never allow that. Then of course there are those who consider LINUX to be more transparent... because it is. And with how windows is requiring higher and higher end hardware to run, no f***in way am I going to switch back to them. I don't know about you, but I'm not rich enough to keep upgrading or replacing my computer(s) every time my OS undergoes a major overhaul. Then of course there was that one time where a microsoft developer didn't know how to remove a windows component that HE HIMSELF BUILT AND IMPLEMENTED. In short, better security isn't the only reason to go with LINUX; the list goes on... aand on.... aaand on.

Security is nice, but you're right. The fact that I can get a full-featured OS without having to pay hundreds of dollars to Microsoft is pretty nice. Not to mention I can contribute to software projects to help make it work even better. Also, most people don't know how to use Linux so I don't have to worry about them screwing anything up. XD

It does make you immune to Windows viruses though, and since this is being distributed as an EXE that makes it a Windows virus.

Since file distributed is .exe, it most likely makes it not a virus at all, but either worm or trojan.
Also, .exe are not specific to Windows system, but to X86 architecture. They /might/ have OS-specific code inside, but the main part isn't.

No, Portable Executable binaries (PE, .exe) are Windows-specific (also, run on ARM in the case of Windows RT and Windows Phone/CE). Macs run OS X, which uses Mach-O binaries. They're different at a fundamental level, so that's why Macs can't run Windows programs (including Windows viruses). Linux/UNIX is also different, using Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) binaries (again, incompatible with Windows programs/viruses).

Never said you can run .exe on a mac, just that they are /NOT/ Windows-specific. Some of them you won't be able to run natively on Windows, others, only on specific Windows versions.

... Though yeah, there's also a confusion of file type/structure and extension. I meant the former.

EXE isn't specific to the X86 platform. EXE is a common extension specific to DOS, Windows(and by extension ReactOS), Symbian, OpenVMS, and OS/2 executable files. Windows CE/Windows Phone runs on the ARM architecture, and it utilizes the EXE extension as well. The formats therein can be different, but they are specific to those Operating Systems.

Of course, since most EXEs are compiled to run on the x86 platform, compatibility layers such as WINE allow them to be executed on other OSes such as Linux and Mac OSX.

.exe is Windows specific (this extension is actually used by several different executable formats, but none of them are OS X native formats). OS X natively uses "Mach-O" files, which can have a .o, .dylib, .bundle, or no file extension. And since you brought the whole X86 architecture into this, I should further add that most modern unix-like operating systems natively use ELF files, which have no standard extensions (bonus knowledge: .exe files also won't run natively on these systems). You may be confusing native execution with the ability to execute a file in a compatibility layer; most downloadable malware only works in its native execution environment.

Also I tend to use the word "virus" in a computer context to refer to all downloadable malware and consider "worms" and "trojans" to just be subclasses of them, so sorry for the confusion there. I'll try to use "downloadable malware" more often in the future. Also, "Windows" includes DOS and OS/2, as long as we're being incredibly anal about terminology. The main point I was making is that .exe isn't a native execution format on Macs, meaning this malware is not targeting them. While I allow for the possibility that someone could write malware that targets OS X through a compatibility layer, I find it exceedingly unlikely that anyone would go to the extra trouble of doing so when it would be so much easier to just write something in a native format- and if they did, they would distribute it in places where they actually expect people to attempt to run it in one (for example, by claiming it's a piece of hard to find software for an old OS that most people aren't using anymore).

Assuming the link was to Youtube, and not a redirect through a malicious third party to youtube, this is impossible.

The only way anything like this could be achieved would be through an XSS attack, which most modern browsers detect. In addition, Youtube's developers are some of the most experienced web devs in the world. Hell would freeze over a thousand times before they made such a mistake.

Also, EXEs aren't dangerous to the system unless they are
*Placed into a startup folder
*Run by the user
and thus unless the user above has a habit of running mysterious EXEs, they're unlikely to be at risk.

Might as well scan to be sure, better safe than sorry and all, but the chances of an infection are incredibly low.

Unless they're just being annoying, I see no other reason to spam with a Youtube link as extensively as they did. As you said, better safe than sorry. I don't click any links from someone I don't know, whether it's obviously to a safe website like Youtube or not.

The Youtube link I received in a random note was just that - A Youtube link. No shenanigans hidden in the URL at all.

Browsers can be exploited to automatically run applications. Of course, if you're running UAC, you can usually tell it not to run it, but even then you're not 100% safe. I've seen viruses/malware take off without any user interaction, just by visiting a site. You should'nt assume you have to run something to get a virus.

Youtube doesn't have a place for user-written code, just vidoes. There is literally no way a youtube link (unless the link was not actually directed to youtube, which is not the case here) could present a security risk to a user's computer.

That's why you should always check where the link actually goes, and not just what it looks like on the site.

Depends on which User sent you the link, some people are smart enough to link it to a virus before sending you to youtube, thankfully the User that spammed me was only of average intelligence-or at least I would say so- it was just some stupid video that I got linked to.

You know you don't need to put your computer and maybe even you network in risk for testing a virus. What you're going to achieve with that? Data security companies like Trend Micro and Symantec take samples of suspicious files from their site for analysis, and plus, they add the solution to the virus database so billions of users will be protected against the said virus.

Be smart.

1. Get virtual machine.
2. Move files to virtual machine.
3. Sever virtual machine's "network" connection after getting all necessary files.
4. Run and begin testing.
5. When done, either revert the virtual machine's file or delete it and start over.

It's not really that complex. I watch virus and rogue testing videos on Youtube and with the amount of times I hear "deletes x files on your shared folders and spreads to other systems on the network", then it's kinda obvious that it needs to be isolated prior to testing.

My point still remains: what are you going to achieve with that? Plus, most viruses nowadays act completely hidden so they don't have anything fun for you to see. The system might operate normally but it could be sending data to a remote machine.

online malware scanners may be able to help identify exactly which type it is,if there is a sample of it. like Virustotal.
(note that it's not always 100% accurate so even if it comes up clean it may still be very bad.)

Virus total use a shared database from a couple of different AVs, so yeah, it has a decent accuracy

occasionally it misses things, but after a few days it gets it right so it's usually a really good service :)

Reminds me of what happened earlier. Someone sent me a note of a link to a "video". I didn't click on it, opting to check out the person first since I didn't know him. It appears he recently joined today and many people have shouted on his shout box to leave them alone, so I ignored the link.

I got a note from someone I didn't know and it was a link to youtube..I assumed it was spam so I deleted it.

I got a note a few days ago asking me to check out and comment on a Youtube video. I've since deleted it, but I'm sure you guys can retrieve the message to track down the spammer.

Try sending the mystery file to virusscan.jotti.org - it'll scan it with the latest version of about 20 different scanners and report what they detect it as - then you can take that name and google it, and voila, you'll know what the file does without sacrificing a system!

Also - MS security essentials is looked down upon by a lot of users online - apparently it misses a lot of the latest virus threats and doesn't have a good firewall. I use Avast! free personally, and it works pretty well =^_^=

Good luck fighting the spammers! Might also want to report them to their ISPs so they can investigate whether they're really spammers or just bots / zombie systems :P

The Microsoft essentials security works AMAZINGLY! I had to use it today for some D-links thing which I assume is the problem and it took care of everything for me! RUN A FULL SCAN! not a quick because mine wouldn't detect anything with a quick. I left for driving school for two hours came back later and my laptop was running better than ever!

I got 3 notes within 20 mins from the same person,and it seems there may be another spam situation, as to where random notes are sent by certain users offering to be friends on Skype, yet, there's not much on their profile to show they're a legit FA member/user, i block them.. Well it was a good laugh to hear these spammers though.

These spammers have been causing nothing but trouble. There's no telling when they'll return.

I haven't been spammed here, but somehow my laptop keeps trying to download something called 226.exe. Thank God for avast blocking it every time. It just pops up randomly on different sites, and I've yet to find out why my laptop is trying to download it. My Anti-virus definitions update regularly, so I don't think I have a virus. But every time my laptop tries to download that exe, I hear "malware detected" and when I look, the download failed.

Go to your control panel an uninstall anything that looks suspicious.

I've been doing that, getting rid of things that I don't use, etc. Will have another look through, though

226.exe is a worm which hooks onto explorer.exe to load itself during windows boot-up.

Its likely 2 different viruses that are downloading each other when one is deleted.

Your antivirus blocks these things to try to protect your data as best it can when you have an infection. Just because your AV is detecting and blocking one malicious download that doesn't mean you should go on to continue using your computer in that state. The infection could be doing other things that your AV isn't detecting. You should really back up your non-executable files and reinstall Windows.

That file was never downloaded. My AV blocked it from downloading at all. Since I removed a few programs on my laptop, I've not had it try to autodownload or even pop-up.

I think you're missing the point

You're already infected with something that was trying to download the file. Files don't just try to download themselves.

And whatever it was, its gone now. Most likely it was one of those three programs I took off.

I clicked out of fa and tried to open it back up in different browsers besides chrome and it lead me to a search engine called D-links and it wouldn't let me go on FA till I got rid of the virus and the virus was consider a HIJACK virus.

Its bolth annoying and bad. It takes over you most viewed site which mine happens to be fa and it would send me to something with a bunch of adds on the side then it would say were you looking for furaffinity.*com* let me point out the .com because FA is a networking site so the link should be furaffinity.net. and then when you clicked on it it would never let you on that site it was piratically a broken link because the .com made it nonexistent.

The bad part is apparently the more you use it the more and more powerful it gets which can lead to having to dump out the whole computer.

Now I don't know if the hijack virus was from this site but I just think its funny how everything adds up.

AVG sounds like its pretty good! Its only super bad if you ignore it, if you scan your computer and get rid of it asap then its all good

I have been hit with Java-based IFRAME attacks that made me have to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE out of the X-server, log out, log back in. Gone (never run as root when on the net!)

If you'd like to include a good Mac virus scanner (yes, this one targets Windows but it can still download regardless) I've always had good experiences with Sophos Anti-Virus http://Sophos.com

This is in exe and WINE in OS X sucks so you should be safe.

You can still download it though and it may not affect your machine but its still not good to have a virus on your computer. There are also programs like Parallels Desktop which effectively to the same as Wine but they actually work. (And FYI I did point out that the attackers are targeting Windows machines)

I was targeted by  Kekepooh yesterday with some half baked story about wanting to get more friends on Skype and to add him/her. The user is not a watcher, not a friend, and had a brand new account with nothing but a huge shout box of others crying spammer or how they downloaded an .exe file and get a virus. I never added them to Skype and I never was going to until I knew who they are. This user is now suspended.

They sent me the same message. I looked at their profile then just deleted it.
