We'd like to reach out to the community with a general alert: there's been a slight rise of spammers (BOO!) and we're working on stopping them. The spammers are attempting to link people to an EXE that is a virus/malware software. We don't actually know what it does (yet) as we're not yet willing to sacrifice a system/virt to test it just yet.
If anyone contacts you by comment, shout or note advertising, promoting or suggesting you download anything, and you don't know the person, do not click it. Don't. Don't do it. You'll explode. Seriously. YOU WILL EXPLODE*.
How do you protect yourself?
* Don't know the person, don't click the link! Simple as that.
* Make sure you have a virus scanner that's up-to-date. Microsoft Security Essentials is free for all Windows users.
* If the link doesn't lead to a reputable site, or uses a link shortener like bit.ly or tinyurl, don't bother with it. Do not click it. Ignore it, and just move along.
Use your better judgment!
In the meantime, we are proactively banning spammers or users sending unwanted solicited notes or text.
* You won't really explode, but we hope you'll believe this anyway. Viruses and malware are bad, and you should fully believe there are horrible repercussions for getting one.

Meesa liken my windows and it funktions and meesa no want to start an operating-system-"fight" here.
Just saying to make that clear. Everyone should use the operating system he or she likes most and not try to evangelise others to his holy sacred land. Please.
People may use whatever OS they like. I don't care :P
After finishing the text, I realized, I should have written the "disclaimer" in the comment to the "win 98 joke"-guy Takaya. You were the wrong target, ivikk. Beg your pardon, mate.
But, really, each to their own.
Agree with you one Microsoft Office though. I use OpenOffice for a reason. XDD
Just install 'wine' through the software center and you're all set. :)
Windows 98 has not detected your keyboard. Press F1 to continue, F2 to abort.
rly, if i could move through time i'd try to kill myself just
for lulzfor science %)Windows has diagnosed this due to commonsense.bin and conscience.exe are missing/have broken file paths.
All it takes is common sense.
If you need a new fancy OS to keep you from being fubar on the internet...you prooooobably shouldn't be on the computer. xD
There are those (like me) who choose to use LINUX because they want an OS that they can actually study the workings of. Microsoft will never allow that. Then of course there are those who consider LINUX to be more transparent... because it is. And with how windows is requiring higher and higher end hardware to run, no f***in way am I going to switch back to them. I don't know about you, but I'm not rich enough to keep upgrading or replacing my computer(s) every time my OS undergoes a major overhaul. Then of course there was that one time where a microsoft developer didn't know how to remove a windows component that HE HIMSELF BUILT AND IMPLEMENTED. In short, better security isn't the only reason to go with LINUX; the list goes on... aand on.... aaand on.
Gérnäd.
"Everyone should use the operating system he or she likes most and not try to evangelise others to his holy sacred land. Please."
Thank you for reading it.
Again. Lol
My point remains. Use common sense in the Internet regardless of what os you use. -.-
And thanks for your avatar. Made me grin wide. =^_^=
Thanks for that great and funny written text of warning!
(Seriously, few things make me laugh harder than conspiracy videos. XD)
Also, .exe are not specific to Windows system, but to X86 architecture. They /might/ have OS-specific code inside, but the main part isn't.
... Though yeah, there's also a confusion of file type/structure and extension. I meant the former.
Of course, since most EXEs are compiled to run on the x86 platform, compatibility layers such as WINE allow them to be executed on other OSes such as Linux and Mac OSX.
Also I tend to use the word "virus" in a computer context to refer to all downloadable malware and consider "worms" and "trojans" to just be subclasses of them, so sorry for the confusion there. I'll try to use "downloadable malware" more often in the future. Also, "Windows" includes DOS and OS/2, as long as we're being incredibly anal about terminology. The main point I was making is that .exe isn't a native execution format on Macs, meaning this malware is not targeting them. While I allow for the possibility that someone could write malware that targets OS X through a compatibility layer, I find it exceedingly unlikely that anyone would go to the extra trouble of doing so when it would be so much easier to just write something in a native format- and if they did, they would distribute it in places where they actually expect people to attempt to run it in one (for example, by claiming it's a piece of hard to find software for an old OS that most people aren't using anymore).
Other people demonstrating the popularity of anti-intellectualism and the need to try to knock down anyone saying stuff they don't understand.
*slaps the "Welcome to the internet sign" onto that comment*
<beep>
The only way anything like this could be achieved would be through an XSS attack, which most modern browsers detect. In addition, Youtube's developers are some of the most experienced web devs in the world. Hell would freeze over a thousand times before they made such a mistake.
Also, EXEs aren't dangerous to the system unless they are
*Placed into a startup folder
*Run by the user
and thus unless the user above has a habit of running mysterious EXEs, they're unlikely to be at risk.
Might as well scan to be sure, better safe than sorry and all, but the chances of an infection are incredibly low.
In this case, it was probably just some kid trying to increase his views through annoying means.
Youtube doesn't have a place for user-written code, just vidoes. There is literally no way a youtube link (unless the link was not actually directed to youtube, which is not the case here) could present a security risk to a user's computer.
Be smart.
2. Move files to virtual machine.
3. Sever virtual machine's "network" connection after getting all necessary files.
4. Run and begin testing.
5. When done, either revert the virtual machine's file or delete it and start over.
It's not really that complex. I watch virus and rogue testing videos on Youtube and with the amount of times I hear "deletes x files on your shared folders and spreads to other systems on the network", then it's kinda obvious that it needs to be isolated prior to testing.
(note that it's not always 100% accurate so even if it comes up clean it may still be very bad.)
Good advices.
I got like 10 on dA bro, like immediately after posting stuff. Super annoying.
Better keep my eye out then!
Are you high?
After a second, I turned it off and deleted the message.
Send the sample to Symantec/Trend Micro and you're done. They have people being PAID to analyse suspicious files and add their info in a database. And more, you'll be immune to this virus so it's a win-win
Keep your Adobe Flash plugin up to date!
my husband fell for one of those fake popup "update adobe flash" things and when I realized he had I facepalmed but it was too late...
had to format and reinstall windows
Move along.
Unfortunately I clicked it, but I'll be running a virus scan shortly to see if anything happened. D:
RHRRAAARAAAAIII!
... and I guess I should be thankful I'm not popular enough to get spammed!
Also - MS security essentials is looked down upon by a lot of users online - apparently it misses a lot of the latest virus threats and doesn't have a good firewall. I use Avast! free personally, and it works pretty well =^_^=
Good luck fighting the spammers! Might also want to report them to their ISPs so they can investigate whether they're really spammers or just bots / zombie systems :P
but then again i had a portable turbine fan and everybody loved it."BitchBeGone

But I just thought the kitchen spammers had followed me.
XD
:I
Stories based around parts of the furry fandom I'd rather stay far, far away from. I look forward to seeing those gone, too.
XD
Its likely 2 different viruses that are downloading each other when one is deleted.
Heres a link to some info about that file: http://www.prevx.com/filenames/1081.....1/226.EXE.html
You're already infected with something that was trying to download the file. Files don't just try to download themselves.
Dose this sound familiar to anyone?
The bad part is apparently the more you use it the more and more powerful it gets which can lead to having to dump out the whole computer.
Now I don't know if the hijack virus was from this site but I just think its funny how everything adds up.
Thanks for the heads up, I do use the occasional Win box.
what flavor?
I have been hit with Java-based IFRAME attacks that made me have to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE out of the X-server, log out, log back in. Gone (never run as root when on the net!)
So now I run with my Java plugin off and never had a problem since
Seconded.
ive seen them before. there last attack that im aware of was on tumblr posting pictures of 80yearold people fucking.
Also, viruses are horribible nasty ugly monstrous things. I learned that the hard way once, and it's why I NEVER ever...EVER...use IE. Whoever is spamming viruses should be ashamed of themselves. :C
Anyway...ramblings aside, thanks for the warning.
Just don't click anything that seems odd :) Nothing to be scared of really if you know a lot about spam, viruses, etc
(I know that.)
Can you please make an option to favorite journals
please
Now there's body parts all over the place...
And everybody dances~
-pulls out popcorn and sits on lawn chair to watch-
... Except, not really.
Internets 101: Never click on suspicious links or execute/download files, unless you're absolutely sure they are safe.
This reminds me, there was this thing on dA a while back, where hackers used legitimate user accounts to send out spam and phishing messages. So I'd advise that people are careful, even when they receive PMs or emails from someone they know.
If I get any more of these spam notes, though, I guess I'll go ahead and send in a TT. I'm just hesitant to because I don't want to flood the admins with multiples of the same request; I just didn't deem it necessary to report this one since 3-4 shouts on the person's page said they already done so.

please email it to me at yukigoesrawr[at]lavabit.com
That's all I can do till this matter is solve.
They really don't bother me because I won't let them.
Still trying to find my left arm.
When I said type of computer I meant PC or mac.
Sorry for the long post but I hope it helps you and anyone else who could be bothered to read this!
I prefer YouTube when they give away free stuff and other websites for winning electronics almost won something, but I lose on most of them, not a single win from me.
I won something and it never came and I got a refund, I check their profile and they got all the negatives, no neutral and/or positive for being a best seller, also online marketing websites is not even free, you gotta pay for it.
it's a christmas miracle!!
:(
oh god
eee
THANKS GUIZ!!!
*ducks*
By the way, most malware is not written for free. That concept is soooooo 90's. Most malware these days has paid call centers, credit card processors, people pay tens of thousands for exploits and kits specifically to make money off you. Black markets for email credentials, ID theft, payment credentials, etc. It's all pretty complex.
But you go ahead and keep living 15 years ago. ^.^ Malware authors -love- people who use free AV because it's hugely easy for them to scan their stuff with it, then change it around until it's not detected by the free stuff, and they don't spend any money on testing against the free stuff.
'You go ahead and keep living 15 years ago.' Thank you, I will! I prefer merchandise that will last beyond the two-year contract.
However, if it helps, yes, in this category, I do know substantially more than you, so it's okay to be wrong sometimes. Heck, I am even wrong sometimes, though rarely on factual statements.
Main thing is that a claim of "I've never had any problems and I use X!" does not make X good. It may make -you- good. For all we know, it may mean you don't know you have a rootkit hiding from X. I prefer to think that you are making intelligent decisions and not clicking on the wrong stuff. Unfortunately, you being smart makes you a rarity. I would NEVER recommend a free AV solution to the average person. Only to people who prefer to rely on their brains and a minimal safety net, or people I don't like.
I bet you also use a layered approach, with stuff like AdBlock and NoScript and checking true destinations and such, as well as occasional scans with MBAM and suchnot (though use smarts with MBAM because it FPs sometimes and blows things up if you just take its word for it).
>furries are immune to understanding jokes.

Thanks for the alert FA staff.
Good luck on fixing as much of it as you can.
*chucklesnort*
I actually really like this idea.
When furs make suggestions it makes me think of the whole "one vote never made a difference" kind thinking.
But then I think "Hey why not give myself a shot whether people care or not, trying is trying! XP
http://snag.gy/iPtqU.jpg
IT LOOKED LIKE THIS? xD
Sounds like they jam Cd's in their urethras.
hot right B3
"Microsoft Security Essentials is free for all Windows users."
Yes but it sucks. Avast! + Matwarebytes' Anti-Malware combo is a lot better.
Blindvixens can't see YouTube.
Diplohandicappedomatic Immuuuuuuunity.
But really, that sucks. It happens on most major websites and it's really dumb if someone's bringing that junk to FA as well. Careful with banning however, some users might have had their accounts hacked and not be aware they're being used for that (MSN / Yahoo! IM bots do such).
Deviantart has the same problem.
My DA account got surprisingly suspended because of that and I can't post anything...-_- I didn't even have a chance to notify my watchers my account sends SPAM and might be banned! It pissed me off Especially nowon summer time when I have a while to work on commissions and while I'm holding an art contest-_- Please, at least you notify hacked users, so they can post a journal informing their watchers how to contact them etc. before you ban them
I hate having to clean up the mess left by spammers; especially emails.
> no love for Spybot? :|
Reminds me of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TINgaAa06Hw
You sir, have won my admiration for the day.
I 2nd the guy who posted earlier... You have also won my admiration for the day ^^
MSE: most basic of all "malware scanners", not updated often enough
malwarebytes: never used, kinda redundant since there's better alternatives that get database updates at least 5 times a day
avast: HAHAH YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING get a proper antivirus. seriously. freeware isn't as good.
get spybot.
peerblock is good too if you torrent
microsoft security essentials
"useful"
it's a really nice program.
Which is why AVG is popular right now.
I honestly thought it was one person or friends individually messaging people they saw on the front page out of an insatiable hunger to fill their pathetic void of a life.
BUT I DON'T KNOW. XD
>=3
But your computer will.
But for a website... WHY!? It's just a single click. =/
Also a good tip by oneandonly: Always check where the link actually takes you.
(Being a former Encyclopedia Dramatica user, I god used to watching the hotlinks)
Or a virtual machine!
lulzsec was a specific hacker group with ten or so members
do you even know what you are saying?
Now my throat is sore due to saying spam too much
when you get 100 submissions a day new stuff and 70 of them are i am streaming posts there is a problem
They are all over dA as well.
asking for help getting my audio file to play properly on FA,
and mentioned that it only worked properly when I download it
and play it from my hard drive. Ugh. That might explain why I
never got a reply. :/
Huh? Oh, sorry 'bout going on like that. Yeah, I will not download anything suspicious, and I probably will be one of the few who are least likely to get a computer virus. Thanks for the warning.
nom-nom-nom!
rofl XD
people sometimes have no life

he is the, if not, one of the people responsible for this, so be on the lookout for this name or any others that send you suspisious links, and report them at once. we will beat this thing, we just need to band together like all the times before.
I.e.
Sent you a link on FA, ask them over IM/text if they sent you said link.
If somebody has hacked into your friends account and is sending the links around, then it's likely they'll convince you to click it.
I'll be pleased as punch to address any crooked entries if I ever receive them...
FUCK ZUCKERBERG THAT GAZILLIONAIRE-EARNING CREEPAZOID
D8<
Maxwell says "Bitches don't KNOW my life!!!"
:3
I DONT KNOW YOU
Gotcha.
I can open it in a virtual environment to test it.
Though, with smartphones and iPods are becoming the norm, I'm expecting someone to make a virus for them.
*glares at DA cause the site kept redirecting me to porntube and other sites like it for a week then it stopped*
Nothing has happened to me on FA though.
While it's furry related, I still consider it spamming as it's complete solicited.
wtf :/
Oh wait.
I see why now.
But I refuse to destroy anyone's technology!
That being said, viruses rise in summer too for similar reasons. Bored programmers (although the really bad summer was due to a programming flaw from Windows in Excel from what I've heard. I got /really good/ at removing viruses that summer and am now a loyal Super AntiSpyware user. XD)
As if someone going to bed is somehow going to change their mind before they wake up. Or someone busy at work is suddenly going to have a 'eureka moment' and decide that in spite of what they're currently doing, buying porn is better.
Link to my security system: http://cbfwd.me/cis [Yeah, it's a redirect, but it's no 'malware/virus' it's just my own domain that I use for sending people to links that are loooooong, plus I'm using an affiliate program and such so I would like to get the benifit from being the one to send you to them...
Note: Yes, this is a free system [unless you want pro which has a $500 virus free gurantee and such] Just select 'CIS Premium - No Card Required!' from the bottom of the list... Also, No, I am not claiming to have made this system in any way shape or form, in fact I'm merely refering you to the system I personally use and recommend, and you will be directed to their website, not mine, and from there you can choose whateva xD
Accounts are not as easy to hack into as you think, so i hope that person gets banned asap.
Let's wait for admins' word.
I also just got spammed by
Chill
Maybe I should kick up a WinXP vm and take a look at what they're peddling.

Offering free Hardblush accounts. All it took was one look at the annoyed folks in their shouts.
