Traditional artists, I have a question.

Hey artists. I had a brainstorm of thinking on making some custom art books. I need your help knowing what kinds of paper do you guys like best, how you like them bound best, etc.
I don't know how long this will take for me to get started on but I need to start thinking on it.
If you know any artists, pass them along to this journal, I need as many opinions as possible.

errr. I can't help sadly. I just draw on whatever comes to hand. I'm not really a "good" artist so I don't buy/can't afford the fancy schtuff

I know a few bound books I saw at AC were using recycled paper

I like very pulpy paper. I honestly don't have a specific reason, I just always like the result better.

Interesting. Do you have a style of binding you like? Easy to remove paper/easy to tear/or solidly held paper?

I know this wasn't to me but I don't like when removing a piece of paper makes a corresponding back page loose. I think for sketchbooks it's gonna go one of two ways. Either an artist will pick up a bound one not meant for tearing apart to do doodles, book auctions, other artists doodles in them - or they will want one that can have pages easily removed as they sell a sketch or what have you. Most pretty custom ones tho end up as ones they keep intact. I would also recommend trying to do "pocket size" ones you could market to artists as having a small portfolio of their talent that could be easily slipped into a handbag ect and is light too. After all most artists at AC already seemed to have too much wait they were lugging round. I met one artist who had a pocket sized sketchbook Abd thought it was a genius idea. It would also be handy for times you might be inspired to doodle but don't want to lug a huge kit round with you . You could even bundle them with a pencil attached by a string maybe tho that sounds dumb now that I've said it lol

Ooooohhh, all are good ideas. Thanks for telling me. Will have to process and think (And no no... the pencil one doesn't sound dumb. One of my favorite note pads has pen that locks it shut)

Glad I could give you some ideas :3

Honestly, usually I just work with what's available, I don't have any solid technique. I just do whatever I feel like and usually I'm happy with the result. I just have fun with whatever I'm working on.

Solidly built. If I like the way something turns out, I use a blade to cut it out cleanly from whatever pad I'm using. Especially if I wanna frame something.

Also, I'm not a very good artist, just been drawing and painting a long time.
