Job searching advice appreciated.

Hey I am currently looking for a job in the city of Merced California, a city where the unemployment rate is high. The most I can do is apply online, call in to check statuses of applications, or walk to my local mall and poke around there.
I am curious if there are any other resources I am missing that might help the search a little more. I don't often look on job boards or use sites such as snag a job or monster. I was wondering if I should actually take any of those sites into consideration.
It's quite hard to find one around here and in order for a number of personal problems to be resolved a job is required of course.
It would be much appreciated if someone could point me to specific sites that may help or can give me a few pointers/tips that might increase my chances, even if it is just by a slim margin.
Thanks for reading and I would appreciate any feedback if you guys can offer it : ).

My only other advice is keep a stack of your resumes on hand, in a folder or something, that you can take with you to potential job places. Just, y'know ask about the job, hand them your resume, and hope for the best? Which is I guess better than nothing in most cases.
._. I wish I could be more helpful Danny, but that is all the advice I have since I am in the same boat as you.
o........mmmmlol! you;re are aright!
