Seems a natural progression, really... it's "The Three Faces Of Adam" in action, and in one character. In the beginning of the series, Rocky Balboa was The Hunter- this nobody who wanted a shot at greatness and through hard work and determination got it. Later, he becomes The Lord- having established credibility and even a family, now we see him fight to preserve what he fought so hard to achieve. And now (and even in Rocky V) we see him as The Prophet- now it's HIS turn to show some wet-behind-the-ears whipper-snapper what's what, like Mick(played by the late, great Burgess Merideth) did for him all those years ago.

Besides... remember the most important thing about being a writer- it's YOUR world, YOUR story. The writer is the god of this place, so the writer can do whatever the heck he wants.
