Looking for suggestions: MMOs
General
I think it's time for a new MMO, perhaps. It's a cheap source of entertainment, especially with friends who play. Problem is, all my friends have kinda drifted away from WoW so now I might be considering a new MMO.
So what's out there, or about to come out? I could use some suggestions!

Games I have fun with
WoW (with all expansions) : Level Cap of 90, hard Story to follow, Tons of Content, Raids, Dungeons, 12 classes to choose from, Multiple Professions.
SWTOR (With expansion) : Level cap of 55, amazing story, all quests are voice acted, 8 classes to choose from each with their own story, Dye Clothes option, Adaptive armor which means say if you like the looks of your armor and dont want to change it all you have to do is take the mods out of a higher level geared object and put those mods into the gear and it will automatically make that old gear say...level 50 gear when it starts out as levle 10.

Games coming out that I think are worth mentioning.
Elder scrolls online
I've been playing this for over 3 years now. Yes, you can be a dragon that shoots lasers from his eyes. It also has a nice (non-erotic) roleplaying community.
It's free2play so why not give it a try?
And here's my character, Hun-Tra, just to show off: http://i.imgur.com/NGdchH2.png
Star Trek Online is quite nice, all things considered, especially for the Star Trek fans.
World of Tanks is good if you're a tank fan and want to just blow stuff up.
There's also Secret World, which is a bit of Cthulhu Mythos mixed with tons of conspiracy theories and other such fun stuff. Illuminati, Templars, magic, tentacles, vikings, ninjas... on the downside, you have to actually buy it first, as opposed to the other three examples, which are free to play.
Though Old Republic's worth the subscription, in my mind.
STO was interesting, I tried it for a few weeks when it first came out. Really clunky, but neat, but I lost interest. :(
Not a huge tank fan really, still might be something to look at!
Another one to perhaps look into. I'm not really into the conspiracy/occult stuff, but it might make for a fun change of pace!

I think that's all I liked that is out at the moment.
And playing with furs isn't neccesary, I'd rather play with people I know. :P
Tried SW:ToR as well. Same deal - Found it grindy and repetitive. Quit after 3 days of playing it. Cancelled sub.
I mostly play solo stuff these days, aside from raiding on WoW. MMOs just... don't tend to grab my interest.
I fell out of GW2 myself after enjoying the hell out of it. No subscription and a lot of monthly released content to explore. It's lacking in the endgame content for those who are looking for raiding and stuff, but it has a nice balanced mix of pve and pvp content. Its good all around and you don't feel obligated to play or rush through it thanks to the lack of a sub fee. Only downside is that aside from the monthly events, there isn't much beyond cosmetics to keep you coming back once you've explored everything. But its kind of a refreshing change from feeling like you have to keep playing.
(PS I kindof used this to respond to Sky and you at the same time)
And also, GW2 has enough to do and revisit, as well as updates every 2 weeks now, that if you are truly out of new stuff to try, you probably played way too much.
Don't get me wrong I loved the game and still think its pretty cool, it just doesn't give me enough meaty content to bite back into. A few cosmetic items, achievements, and a free piece of gear just doesn't feel worth it to me now that I've explored most of the dungeons and zones. Perhaps I rushed through it all too quickly when the game first came out.
Not that I would garunteed play one, but the variety would be nice, you know?
I'm not saying go out and blindly buy it :p just gave my impressions. phase 4 beta should be around august 8th which is open beta if your wanna give a swing at it. other wise if it's not your cup of tea it's not. *shrug* hah.
Ehmry Bay server has a massive number of furries. (Myself included)
No monthly fee.
Guild Wars II is pretty solid
Spiral Knights and Haven and Hearth are completely free, downloadable niche MMOs that you could poke around with.
In terms of innovation there is "shit" to innovate with MMO's and anyone that says they are innovative just sprinkled some scented water on teh shit.. Sadly it all comes down to play style and investment.
Neverwinter drove me nuts. it was a sit down and wait... or pay money to get stuff done. To many currencies I mean really why even have gold when everything is done in astral diamonds?
WoW? I quite it after 8 years ONLY because all my friends had quit and ONLY because I'd lost my investment in the game when I was told I'm back seat shut up your not raiding unless we randomly need to fill a spot.
SWTOR, wasn't bad, but honestly the everything is voiced got old... and most of the time boring. Also geeing to max level and then being told "yeah... about your hopes and dreams of being a tank? NOPE! Reroll and level the same character again only this time choose the other type and you may get invited to a party and have fun!" also the lack of LFG pretty much pissed me off as I have odd hours and would spend all my time yelling for groups.
Guild wars? Watched the yogscast play it, did some research, and basically didn't touch it. Didn't like how it looked, didn't like the back-story.
Secret World? Didn't touch it. I read about, thought it was interesting, but at the time I wasn't just not into modern fantasy horror. Also wasn't to sure about their "class" system. If they'd offered a free download that disabled itself after a month before buying the game I'd have given it a chance.
Wildstar? Comical... I like how they present the game, but it appears to be a somewhat heavy PVP style game and I hate PVP. I may still try it, but I'm more set on FF14.
FF14 reminds me of my old play experience with Star wars Galaxies, only with less stupidity. My beta experience was positive coming from someone that's picky about games. It also offer's some very in-depth and interesting crafting and gathering AS "classes" that gain abilities as you level, however unlike the original you can't start as one of the crafting classes. overall my play time in beta lead me to a very fun and enjoyable experience. Granted it's not everyone's cup of tea, but you sound like you've formed all your opinions on the thoughts of another. I wasn't all that interested in FF14 from my first MMO experience with FF11. FF11 was the most godawful community and game experiences I had ever had in an MMO when it first came out. The beta invite to FF14 gave me the chance to change my opinion.
I suppose after FF7 everyone's been a bit "miffed" at final fantasy in general. God forbid anyone "ruin" that experience. And my first true game that I played with a PASSION was FF7, so don't think I hate the game. It lead me down a LONG road of very happy gaming as it and Chrono Trigger rekindled my love for RPG's in high school, but I think to many people want that FF7 "experience" from Final fantasy... and sadly you can't go back to being an awkward teenager so you can play a modern game and get that "moment" again. And by moment I mean that DEFINING moment... that game, that passage in a book, that scene in a movie, or that comic book that defined that element of a person... that lit the fire so to speak. It's like the "wow syndrome" and people saying "wow is superior cause it's wow and it's the awesomest game ever!" only you can replace wow with any game that appeals to a person that they will go to every-time... that they will play and play till even they don't know why they play it... but they keep coming back.
Though sadly I'll just get a TL;DR or no response.
I'm glad that FF14 reminds you of happy times you had in the past. It seems to be the reason most people play that game.
another i play aside from WoW and guild wars 2 is Rift. not to bad of a MMO. but to be honist i dont really play the later three very much due to time reasons. kinda hard to juggle multiple MMO play time.
Pretty much, there is no right or wrong way to do your character, Say you want a lot of crit, you go for it. Want to be a bunker with a lot of toughness and health, you can. Focus on condition damage, welcome to.
It was a fun game, but not exactly one you play for hours on end. Takes a little while to get maxed out level wise. AH isn't super bloated cost wise, andthe pvp in it is a few areas to explore as well. But you kinda gotta be in a group and theres a lot of zerging that happens unless you sneak into an enemy base.
I liked it. Was very fun while I played it. Woudl be even more fun to play with people you know.
Nwverwinter isnt bad and its free to play as well
Istaria: Chronicles of the gifted -An MMO featuring full sized dragons as a playable race. P2P unfortunately, but has a large furry community.
War Thunder -Aerial combat MMO. Free, but with payable features. Soon to feature ground, and eventually naval simulations.
Elder Scrolls Online is in beta, but it looks to be a WoW clone unfortunately.
World of Tanks is worth a look, but it has some serious balance and matchmaking issues that make whole tech trees almost unplayable.
IIRC you're a 40k player, so Dark Millenium Online might be worth a look.
Warframe: F2P, with some 'micro' transactions (if by micro, I mean newer stuff typically starts at $30); most items can be made within the game itself. More focused on skill based action and PVE (where skill is the player him/herself). Plus you are a ninja. With guns.
Dragon's Prophet: People seem to like it. I haven't actually tried it yet. Also F2P.
Wildstar: WILDSTAR, Y U NO OUT OF BETA YET?!
Scarlet Blade: Actually not that bad. For a M rated F2P MMO, which appears to be essentially be just full of loosely dressed women, has a rather decent story behind it. Worth your time but not heavy investment.
Hawken: Need a Steel Batallion fix (and no, I don't mean the dreadful XBox360 Kinect one)? This F2P game pulls seriousness on the graphics department and is what I'd call a benchmark for a mech simulator FPS.
Play Dark Souls.

This guy can help you choose since he breaks down the elements and what he thinks of them before giving a final opinion.
As for MMO suggestions, what kind of game are you looking for Sky? Since you left WoW are you seeking a game that has that style of gameplay (WoW clone) or did you want to try something radically different? Did you want to stick with the fantasy theme or are you interested in sci-fi. What games have you tried?
So!
If you fancy paying once,
- I'd suggest guild wars 2. While it may get boring in long run, it will provide at least a month or few of game. Earns the price and you can always return later ;)
If ya wanna free games:
- Star Trek Online, which isn't bad at all as game on itself, and the team is decent too, but if you do not like star trek, you may not want to touch it.
As F2P scheme goes, it might be the best out there too. No real gameplay limitations there, while everything else you can unlock, with enough time or dedication, with in-game currency.
- If you like old games that do have limitations which cannot be omited without paying, EQ2 isn't bad yet. + it has scalies and draconians. You can kill the most irritating limitations for $5, to get 'silver' account (But if you ever subscribed before, you get silver free)
Simulator/mmo
-War Thunder --> ww2 flight sim, combat, so on
-World of Warplanes --> It's a beta still, not sure how easy it is to join. Like above but definitely more arcade than simulator
-World of Tanks --> Fun for a time at least, Tanks
That's....about it I think. There's been very few I tried and got pulled into that I can recommend.
Then there is 'Neverwinter Nights', which SILL is played after so many years. Technically not MMO, but with the servers run by community out there, it's nearly exactly same idea.
Whichever you choose of those, if any, I'd not mind a poke, to perhaps play together now and then ;)
