Macro Zine update: submission guidlines for test issue
12 years ago
I want to the local printer's today to get a quote on production cost for the first issue.
This first issue will be more of a test to see if the format goes over well and will include only art and written work.
20 copies printed in black and white at 30 pages each will cost $98.73 according to the printer.
With postage and other stuff I'd probably budget about $150 to get a test issue out, which can be done easily.
I found a program similar to Adobe InDesign, which I used a lot in school for designing brochures and things, so I'll be playing around with that for the next few days deciding on a layout.
If you're interested in submitting something, post a comment here or PM me, I'll need writers and artists, though I'm not sure how many slots will be available as of yet
Basic guidelines for the test issue:
Artwork
Can be something you've drawn or something specifically for the magazine
Must be black and white or a sketch, no color yet
Preferably portrait format (landscape might require printing it sideways or resizing it which looks sloppy)
Traditional work must be scanned at at least 600 dpi and delivered as a .png image
Written work
About 1000 to 2500 words
May have to be reformatted slightly to fit

As for a digital copy, I may release a .pdf version after the print version comes out if people are interested.
Also include any description and contact info you'd like included along with the submission.
I have some stories posted on my page that fit the short length that not many people may know about. Are those okay, or are you looking for new stuff not posted anywhere else yet?
Hopefully after I get some feed back on the first issue I'll begin moving to adding color to the zine. The end goal is to have a publication of high quality prints compiled together for people who might not be able to get them by themselves.
If the zine lasts more than one issue then I'll probably shop around to find better printing prices to lower the cost.
The first issue will cost about $100 to produce, so $6 an issue would probably be just enough to cover the cost of production and shipping, but hopefully through some research and haggling I'd like to get it down to $3-4 if it's possible.
As for a .pdf version, it's too early to tell at the moment, but there will probably be one available.
My biggest worry would probably be that the printer might not accept it if it has mature stuff, but I can't say yet.
Personally I'd like to have a section for mature work seeing as most of the contributors are adults anyway >.>
If you're already full, no problem -- I understand that you are working with a limited amount of space -- but I'd love to contribute if I could ^^
What level of content would be considered appropriate for submission - adult, pg-13, pg?
As for content, any submissions are fine right now, though I'll probably try and keep any adult work in it's own section.
The first issue is mainly a test to see if people like the layout, font, size, paper quality, things like that. Then I can use any feedback to hopefully make the second issue better.
If a second issue gets made and interest drops off after that, I'll probably continue to give away the excess copies. If interest picks up then I may ask for people to start paying to cover the cost of postage while I shop around to try and lower the cost of production.
Right now I'm just using the local print shop because it's close, after talking to the editor of Megamorphics it seems that a Print on Demand service might be more suitable.
In short, yes, if possible it will be public :)
