Yeah, I'm alright. I've had a lot of rats (and still do!), so I am used to their shorter life spans and their ailments. But this came so out of nowhere that is just shocked me so badly I really got emotional over it. I genrally take the little monsters passing on very well because I know it's end end of their life spans and I've given them a full, happy life.

But it was just so sudden. D:

Thanks. It does suck, but I'm far more upset that is was so sudden and completely out of nowhere. I know rats have short lifespans, but I'm usually well prepared before they finally pass on.

Yeah, no joke. How old was he? They usually make it to 4 years.

I've never had one who's made it to 3, sadly. Most of ours have been around two years. We just lost our oldest old man last month (we were expecting it, however) and he wasn't quite three.

One of my two girls is probably at least two and she's showing no signs of an old rat. So she may end up being the exception.

Most of ours are from local pet stores, or were rescues, so their genetics and backgrounds are iffy.

Ah, true. Mine were females and they made it to 2 years - before my dad decided to let them go out in a fucking field while I was at work, whole other story - and showed no signs of aging at all. I think females last longer for some reason.

I'm so sorry... That's pretty much what happened with most of my ratties. They were fine one day then gone the next.

Yeah, they tend to go pretty quickly. I'm ust used to them living to be old and crotchety and THEN passing on. Not swiftly declining over the course of an evening. :/

Having experienced the loss of a pet, it hurts just to think about it happening to anyone.

I don't even know you, but my thoughts go out to you on this one.

I am used to losing pets (meaning, I'm used to them living out their time and then passing on and being prepared for it), like I've mentioned about, I've had (and have) quite a handful of ratlings. I know they have short lifespans and all, but whatever ailed him came down on him so fast there wasn't a lot I could do otherwise. He literally just got this sick last night before I went in to work.

I had a similar situation with one of my larger dogs. He had been sick, but he was well on the road to recovery when he suddenly died one night at the foot of my mom's bed. I remember it was the shock of it all that hurt more than anything...

Aww, seeing that pic of him broke my heart. Poor darlin' thing - He looks like he was a sweet little rascal. My sincerest condolences.

He was such an awesome little beast. He'd sleep on the bed and he loved everyone. He wasn't afraid of our kittens and was just one of the friendliest little monsters we've had.

I'm just happy he's not suffering anymore. I know I did all I could for him under the circumstances and he lived a full and happy life, even if it did seem too short. He was close to two years, so I know he was getting old, but he didn't act it.

Oh no.. I just came home from work and rushed to see if there was any update. That's the trouble with rats.. they get so sick SO fast.. ugh I'm so sorry for your loss honey. He's playing hard up at the bridge <3

And pestering all of the horrible beasties who went before him. XD

Yeah, it was the shock of the suddenness (on top of emotional PMS bullshit, too!) and how quickly his health declined over, like, the course of an evening.

Yeah, I'm alright. I know I'll be going to the cage to try and bring him out at some point, because of how abruptly it happened. :/ And that's always difficult.

He's only the second split masked rat we've ever had. And he had such a unique personality and love sleeping on our bed.

He sounds like a sweetie ^-^ it's obvious you two had a close bond.

It's so sweet to hear how much you loved each other.

It always hurt the most when it's abrupt, I lost my uncle that way. He was very young and I saw him the night before and it just happened in the night and I always refused to believe that he was gone. I kept expecting him to come out laughing and such.

I love all of my ratties. I know when I tell people we have over ten they're all '...oh'. and probably assume that they don't all get enough attention. But they really do. Some have their own independent personalities, of course, and don't really want to be cuddly and form a super close bond, but they're still loved just as much.

Oh gosh, my uncle passed away a few years back and we hadn't seen much of each other over the years prior to his passing. I STILL refer to him as if he's alive. It's very strange.

Sorry for your loss, but of course such is life. May your wounds be healed with much haste.

Such is life indeed. But at least I know that. And I know we gave him a wonderful, happy life with many friends and lots of treats.

What more could he have asked for :)

He seemed like a rat I would've gotten along with... haven't met many, and most didn't like me for some reason. :/ Maybe because my fursona's a cat? O_o Sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is to lose a pet. </3

Rats, like, dogs, cats and other animals, really don't react to what someone thinks their online presence is. :X

Besides, rats are more likely to hide in fear from felines than be aggressive towards them. Some of my rats wander around on the bed when my kittens are out and all the cats do are follow them around curiously and try to play with their tails.

Rats, if they're handled a lot and well socialized are generally very friendly creatures. Some have personalities where they'd prefer not to be bothered with pets or handling, but they're not mean. They just prefer to be left to their own devices.

They must've been brought up that way I guess. :/ Oh well. I do hope that you can get a new rat to replace him eventually and have more fond memories.
