My Picks for the Best and Worst of the First Doctor
12 years ago
The good, the bad and the ugly. What made the first doctor good? The fact that he did actual time travel, visiting other periods of time and getting into mischief; which is something later Who did not deal with. The doctor himself was pretty great in that he acted superior to the humans around him because he knew that he was. He was a curmudgeon, but over the series you saw that he learned the value of companionship.
The bad? The doctor didn't really do much, but stand around and observe. He always had the answer and it was usually pulled off at the last minute.
The ugly? Writing Sarah Kingdom out of the show after one serial. This was a companion who would hands down be a fan favourite if she had survived past the serial that she was in.
The Best:
The Aztecs--An interesting episode with great costumes and set pieces.
The Sensorites--A creepy introduction made me love this episode, afterwards it's rather blah.
The Rescue--An interesting mystery episode; introduces Vicky who was one of my fave companions during this series.
The Romans--Another fun historic episode, great costumes, great concept and Nero burning down Rome.
The Crusade--I love the history episodes.
The Chase--Not a great episode, but a nice send off for the original companions.
Galaxy 4--Can be really annoying because of the sounds. Interesting aliens and robots and a "Don't judge a book" moral.
The Arc--An exploration of the effects of the doctor's meddling. The monoids are a neat race as well.
The Worst:
Edge of Destruction--Two episodes of utter nonsense.
The Web Planet--Noisy, blurry and a confused mess.
The Celestial Toymaker--The first serial where you could tell William Hartnell was not well; spent most of the serial as a disembodied hand.
Almost Great:
The Gunslingers--Needed less singing.
