Gay reproduction?
Recently I watched this video on reprograming stem cells. Give it a look before reading further.
There is a process in which scientists can revers engineer a normal skin cell back into a stem cell. They don't need to take it from a fetus, they can just take it from a fully grown adult. From then they can make that stem cell become any body cell they want. They even talk about turning these stem cells into sex cells, such as sperm cells and egg cells.
This got me thinking...
Allot of people say that gays can not reproduce. But I now have a strong theory that would prove that statement false.
Lets say you have a loving gay couple, such as two men for example. Male A could have one of his skin cells reverted into a stem cell. From then that stem cell could become anything, in this case a fertile egg cell. Male B has one of his sperm cells fertilize that genetically engineered egg cell and have that fertilized egg cell placed in a surrogate mother. Nine months later a normal healthy baby would be born. A baby who would be genetically related to both male parties.
Since scientists have proven that they can turn skin cells into stem cells and stem cells into any cells they want to, I believe that it is very possible for gay couples to have children that come from both of them.
Isn't science cool?
What do you guys think? Do you agree do you disagree?

The way I see it it's a win for everyone, somebody who needs help becoming pregnant gets her wish, I still have a child/children somewhere, and somebody who needs help gets it.
The first occasion this would be true that comes to mind would be lesbian couples, though If for some reason a heterosexual couple aren't fertile on their own donated material could be used.
Personally Id do the stem cell thing. I would want to have a child that was me and my partner's. I have read several stories about how some gay couples nocked up a woman (even having her sign a release form, relieving her of parental rites) then the woman later sued for custody. In most cases a judge will favor the weeping "mother" over the gay guys. I say fuck that. I don't want the risk of losing my child.
While it may be a problem in some states now it shouldn't be in the near future.
Stem cell therapy in general cost around $500,000
So we are talking about some where between $500,000 and $600,000 for a stem cell surrogate baby for gays.
Thank gosh I don't have to think about this too much.
Anyone who says something like "well, you can't do that because you need the DNA of a woman to make an egg."
Think back to basic biology... Don't ALL embryos start off as female (XX), and later some embryos develop a second chromosome to become a male (XY)?
I think Rain has the right idea... Take the skin cell from partner "a" and bring it back to the stages of an (XX) stem cell. Then bring back the skin cell from partner "b" to the stages of an (XY) stem cell... There you go, you now have both the XX (female) and the XY (male) to create an egg from one partner and a sperm from the other partner... It's a 50/50 combination of both partners' DNA to create a baby.
(just kidding - you're freaking awesome because you have the talent to make people think)
I just hope that you stay the same lovable Rain for ever, and never use your talent for evil
I'm glad that I never had any kids... STD can be treated with modern medicine, CHILD SUPPORT NEVER GOES AWAY!!!
Protects from STD and the dreaded CHILD SUPPORT!!

Oh you're so silly - That would be super!
I love SCIENCE
finding the catalyst to change our normal cells to something else is right around the corner now..what we do with that technology next will decide a good chunk of our fate.
PANDAMONIUM
turn the cell into lizard and bat dna (if possible to mix in two)
WE HAVE CREATED DRAGONS. ANTHRO ONES. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW
seriously though, you guys are all hilarious XD damnit my family is sleeping, I shouldn't be laughing this hard
I don't think for instance if some eccentric person thought it would be a cool idea to have their child be born without limbs anyone would say it would be in their right to make that happen, while at the same time I would find it perfectly ethical to abort a fetus before it had become a person.

I guess gays won't make mankind extinct after all.
No pun intended.
sorry, I'm bad at jokes XD
seriously, this is great to hear, and could mean a lot for the gay community
Always wash the sand off of the jalapeño before eating it *nods head*
There are a lot of child that need a family
I can become a natural dad. Yes!!!
In this case you would become the natural "mom"
Lets just say I'll become a parent.
As for the child, i don't think it makes it less alive or natural from how it was created, all that matters is that it shares the same genetic as any human being and it was blessed with the spark of light and it should be treated like a living breathing creature.
So yes i'ld agree on that, would i do it, if i marry a man and we both want a child from us both together really badly and other options are off the table yes.
But on the other hand, we can't abuse it, choosing genes and mixing things that should not mix, so putting it bluntly " NO GENETIC VARIACY MEANS SHIT WILL HIT THE FAN, I'M SUPER CEREAL"
PS Rain, thanks for posting this, i know its weird but i really love thinking about new ideas and discussing them XP THANKS
However, I can't help but consider several variables that come with this. First and foremost, research and the like would probably take a hell of a lot of time and money, and doing it will probably remain incredibly expensive until... Who knows, 2256? That's a big setback, socially speaking. Other than that, I'm also curious how this would work for lesbian couples; what I mean is, if you make a sperm cell from one of the mothers, wouldn't that only have the X chromosome, meaning that lesbians could only have girls? What do you think?

So expect Elton John to be one of the first proclaimed mommies.
As for lesbians. It would be the same. The skin cell is being turned back into a stem cell. The stem cell is a genetically blank slate. It has no gender. It could develop the proper chromosomes once directed to become a sperm cell.
Debate aside, this is a pretty nifty development, mainly since should it develop further, stem cells will be MUCH more readily available, and will probably put a lid on some of the controversy that has people so hot and bothered about stem cell research.
Why stop at changing them into zygotes? Stem cells have the most universal property to do whatever you want!
Diabetes Myelitis? Take a healthy stem cell, change it into pancreas tissue, replace faulty pancreas.
3rd degree burn? Stem cell the shyt out of it! Boom! New skin with no scaring.
Effective HIV treatment? Take the Stem cell, turn it into HIV resistant CD4+T lymphocyte.
Any many more to come!
I'm not used to the whole Idea of male-male reproduction, but whatever. Japanese scientists made meat out of poop. Just saying!
Any ways, what I believe and what will come to fruition are but separate realities.
I cannot say I agree with the whole thing, and considering there are many children who could use a loving home.
The idea of 'playing God', I cannot say anything to that, regardless of my religious intentions and beliefs. We'll let the Big Guy himself handle it.
What I like about stem cells is their universal properties. We have been successful with one group of stem cells, the ones from bone marrow. Seems to me there were many applications that have been good; even an HIV+ man has become 'asymptomatic' or 'clinically cured' of HIV.
Something to ponder.
God bless.
For two I don't think "cross reproduction" is all that extream.
And three. AIDS can't be cured and it's inappropriate to use the term clinically cured because slapping a label that uses the word cured make carriers less inclined to use protection.
2) You may be right. I may be wrong. We are all entitled to our own opinion.
3) I know that AIDS cannot be cured. I made the response to HIV due to the Berlin Patient news. They were given a bone marrow stem cell transplant that carried a gene deletion in the donors genome called CCR5-Delta 32. There are no signs of HIV, HIV antigens, and the patient has been off HAART therapy, for all I know. That is why I quoted the words 'asymptomatic' and 'clinically cured' because researchers are being careful in accepting that idea that they have been 'cured' of HIV.
It is never a good idea to be unsafe for ANY reasons, what-so-ever! If people stop using protection due to the successful eradication/treatment of HIV, then I can come up with 10 other diseases they are playing roulette with!
Remember: " A soldier never storms into battle without a helmet!"
Oh, science...you!
