A question of printing

One for the artists this, or anyone else who can help :) I've got a project in mind for an upcoming convention, and I wondered about hi-res printing, lemme explain further:
Most of the time I colour using Prisma markers, what I wanna know is if I wanted to sell prints of a certain picture, is it better to undertake the task with my own printer or put them in the hands of someone else? When I was over in the US for last year's AC I know that some artists popped along to Kinkos and other places, and I'm just wondering if it's worth doing the same over here?
Obviously the scanned picture never looks as good as the original, but for the purposes of created prints what would be the best settings to use (resolution, image size, etc?)
Any help on such a matter would be greatly appreciated :)
Many thanks

Personally, I scan my images at 300dpi (48-bit colour depth) on a CanoScan LiDE 30, edit the pictures on Photoshop Elements 2.0 (to correct any discrepancies in colour and brightness, plus to remove any noise), then print them on a Canon i560 on high quality photo paper at maximum quality.
When I scan my images, an A4 sheet ends up 2460 x 3500 pixels; and as a bitmap, that takes up 26MB.
If your equipment can match (or better - my stuff's 3 or 4 years old now!) those figures, and your printer doesn't drink ink like a reveller on a Saturday night, then I'd suggest to try producing them yourself. If not, then try the professional printers.
Hope you find this info useful!
