Well I don't have a vehicle, and I think Ann Arbor would be out of  Roiu_Loup's way, However Ann Arbor isn't necessarily out of the way if you're traveling to Chicago. It sits directly on I-94, which goes all the way and is 70mph until IL.

I am okay with any plans that means I'd get to the con, and I'll pay my share of gas

Where are you located again? I don't want you to backtrack if you don't have to.
