it doesn't look like it has a lot to do with the story i read. or maybe it was just the way i read it. in the context of the decdade in which i first read it.
there is a dragon, and the barrel ride. and the names of the characters are the same.
well the ring turned out mostly better then how it looked in the trailers.
i'm just glad, looking at the trailer, that they didn't call it the hobbit.
The ONLY complaint I have is that Legolas doesn't belong, and the shoehorned Tauriel doesn't either, but I'm withholding ACTUAL judgement on them until I see the film.
It IS the Hobbit. it's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Just like The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers was still called The Lord Of The Rings.
I am GLAD they are including things from the appendices (the fight at Dol-Guldur, the White Orc), I'm GLAD they're expanding things briefly mentioned in passing (STORM GIANTS!), and I'm glad I'm getting a long, beautiful epic as opposed to, say, something short like the cartoon from the 70's (that the movie has nods to, obviously). It IS the story I read, beautifully brought to life, with the added bonuses of seeing more of a world I love.
NO FILM ADAPTATION IS 100% FAITHFUL, and I've come to accept that. There are some things that just don't translate well from book to film, and that's something very important to remember. I used to rage over the changes in the Harry Potter films, but as an adult, I can watch and enjoy them for how well they brought the world to life- even if they changed or missed some things i would have liked to see.
But this? This has everything except minor, minor things- the eagles didn't bring them sheep. Big whoop. Bilbo didn't duck in the books- meh.
I love it, I love what Jackson did to it, I loved what he did with The Lord Of The Rings, and I am excited for every installment of this franchise.
whenever i see the process resulting in an ever greater emphasizing of conflict elements, i find that disturbing.
there is always a chicken or the egg element to the stories a culture demands, and the culture that demands what aspects to the stories.
if i get the chance, i probably will go see it. so the movie industry gets their pound of flesh either way.
i don't get labeling people's honest doubts as hate.
