An evil witch in the story of Cinderella? A Chevrolet instead of a pumpkin coach? Check out some of the animal characters in this oddity:

I'd say they got the idea from radio, where a prominent sponsor was featured on almost every show during its heyday. TV shows also started out that way, before the "30 second commercial" took over.
It also means that commercials during movies is actually a much older concept then most people think. People (and me included!) groused and complained a lot when commercials were introduced before movies; they've been around 80 years, though!
At least these were well made and not just generic ads.
