hearing problems / computer problems

General
Ever since the last day of my cold ended earlier this week, I woke up with a feeling like there's cotton in my ear, and so far I haven't been able to get it out. It's been about 3-4 days and I am still not able to hear very well out of my left ear (which btw, has always been a problematic ear for me).
I am somewhat concerned, but not too concerned as of yet. I've been trying to change the pressure on my eardrum to see if it's just because my sinuses are clogged, and I think this may be the case. I'm not sure, however.....
That being said, it's not like it's a huge deal right now, None of the songs I've made recently are in stereo 8)
On a semi-related note, my windows partition's been having assloads of problems, one of which being that my 4.1 audio is being demuxed to stereo for whatever reason I can't explain (It even does this in the channel test control panel!). I'm trying to figure out what to do, hopefully I won't have to re-install the drivers, since RealTek's a PITA to get "just right" and uninstalling it will make all my defaults switch to my USB headset (which would be a disaster)..... :T
On top of that problem, I'm also having Windows's Data Execution Prevention shutting parts of the OS down for no discernible reason (service host svchost) -- No, I'm not running any "weird" services :T
And finally, Ubuntu 8.10, if you have a modern machine, is a very very cool distro to try out. Multiple displays finally WORKS and the new glx driver from nvidia kicks ass. My only gripe is that I can't boot into it anymore cause bluetooth gets stuck in an infinite loop during init (is this a known bug?) 8|
Well, hopefully I can solve most of these issues x_x

Regarding Realtek audio... Well. Bleh. :|
And Ubuntu, if you can disable bluetooth temporarily, I think an update fixed that. I had something related to that happen once, but it hasn't occurred since. Also, dual-displays for me works, but for some reason the settings don't get saved so I wind up having to enable the second display every time I boot. And there's the xbox360 controller bug, but that's a bit minor.

Now I just need to get it to stop telling me a connection's been established when I log in... >_>
As for the sound card, I actually have some experiences with integrated Realtek Soundcard. But as soon as I found out that it didn't support Fraps and microphones, I bought simple yet great Creative Audigy-soundcard for a cheap. I really recomment getting a Creative-soundcard with a X-fi-support.
Alternatively, I think it feels like I have a pea in my ear =S
Usually it breaks up by itself, alternatively ear drops could help.
As for DEP, it can be turned off entirely if it's giving you a real problem. But I would do a virus scan with Avast (since it's the one that most script kiddies themselves use it's fairly immune to most of the garbage). If your system comes up clean then I'd just turn DEP off (I have it off on my own system and I've experienced no problems). I even have UAC turned off... some articles say your system wont be as secure, but after using XP for so many years I already know what to avoid since it didn't have that crap to "help".

Ubuntu is fun, but it's such a hassle to get the tablet working that I decided not to use it for awhile (it was especially difficult o my system since every number was off from what was being reported for some reason, I would have given up completely if I wasn't already comfortable with a command line from all root experience on my server). If Pavel continues working on Pixel though and get's it up to 2.0 I'll try it out again so I can test Pixel and see if it holds up to Photoshop by that point. He's got a dev team now, so that's pretty awesome.
Not sure why your audio would be demuxing, but I doubt it would be because of the partition... that one I'd have to be there to look at. Hope you can figure it out without too much trouble.
I'd check the Ubuntu forums about the bluetooth thing.

(just kidding XD)
Good luck with your computer issues. I also cannot get Ubuntu to boot or even install properly, my copy of Vista worked for a couple months (I used Acronis Disc Director to move some free space to another partition and it somehow erased my settings and invalidated my copy), but XP is still going strong :p
I too had a cold from that time.
Heh, my PC is practically ancient, and with a fairly old card, but I can run up to 3 monitors and 8 simultaneous videos XD ( Though the card is too old for recent gfx shaders)
